Antonio "Tony" Perello, Jr.

1950 ∼ 2020

Antonio "Tony" Perello Jr, 69, of Houston, Texas passed away Saturday, May 16, 2020. Tony was born July 26, 1950 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Antonio Perello and Rosa Andina Galindo Perello. Tony was a member of the Catholic faith and was a retired Computer Technician although he continued working part time until his death. Tony proudly served his country as part of the U. S. Army 327th Signal Company returning from the Vietnam War in March 1971. Tony never met a stranger. His warm demeanor, eager personality, and profound kindness were magnetic to all who came in contact with him. You always walked away with a new friend. Tony had many interests, but his real passions lied in books and history. Namely, books about history. Whether it was a biography about Catherine de Medici, or an anthology of military history, he devoured it from cover to cover. Birthdays and Christmases always saw at least 4 new additions to his personal library. A book, was always the perfect present for Tony. Above all, Tony loved to travel. He was a traveler in his heart, in his soul, and in his life. His wanderlust spanned across 4 continents, where he immersed himself in the culture, language, and daily life of whatever country he visited. Whenever he returned from his travels, he always had new stories, recommendations, and a few hundred pictures to be shared with friends or at the next Perello family gathering. Tony is survived by his sister, Rosa Perello Landry and husband Ronald of Groves; four brothers, Luis Perello and wife Carmen of Sugar Land, Mario Perello of Houston, Ricardo Perello and wife Lori of Georgia, and Ruben Perello and wife Judy of Sugar Land; also numerous loving nieces, nephews, friends, and extended family all over Honduras. A visitation for family and friends will begin at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, May 30, 2020 at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves.

My younger sister, Jessie, painted Tony from a picture I took when he visited me in Plano, TX. We ate at Bavarian Grill and caught up after years of friendship. He was a wonderful person, and I wish he was here with us today, as no doubt he would still be my friend.

We crossed paths a few times since high school as recently as 2017 when about 10 BBHS graduates in Houston had a mini-reunion. He looked healthy & positive and it was a shock that we lost him. He was a lifelong friend. I so want to visit him again but will have to wait till it's my turn to go. We miss you for now Tony. God Bless.

To my amazing Godfather... you were so loved and will be forever missed. I am so blessed to have had you in my life for 33 years and share so many great memories with you. Most of these memories were over holidays but every one consisted of the best conversations. You taught me about kindness, that knowledge is endless and above all, the Catholic Faith. I will miss your sweet voice, infectious laugh and smile that lit up a room. Until we meet again, please watch over your family and friends. I love you so much and miss you already.

The last time I saw Tony was when BBHS classmates gathered to celebrate our 50th reunion. When it was time to sit and eat our meal, Tony and I and Mickey Cascio sat together at the end of a table. We had a wonderful conversation about school days but mostly about Tony's travels. He had been to some interesting places. I'm happy that we were able to sit and talk a bit. Rest in Peace Tony.

Dear Tony, I remember the first time I met you It was at your mother's house Or maybe it was on the day she died Or maybe it was at a wedding Or maybe it was on that crazy day A day in which your niece was sick Out of nowhere sickness called A time of the month that shows no mercy for no women I was young, too young to be married You probably knew this but you didn't care I was family but most importantly Your niece who you barely knew That was your family You showed me another meaning of family You showed both your niece and I A different meaning of family A good one, a true one One that despite the long distance One that despite that I had never known you You took me in with your eyes closed A stranger married to your niece I never saw you again I even confused you for a brief moment The day that I found that you had passed But the memory remains of that one day... A stroll around the Houston Galleria A day in which your niece had gotten very sick And out of nowhere you stepped in And taught me that it was okay to be helped It was okay to care for a loved one even who you had just met It was okay to help a husband in need You taught me a different kind of kindness A memory that I will never forget And a moment that I will ever cherish I am grateful and I am lucky that I got to meet you Goodbye Tony, goodbye
