Barney Curt Choate

1952 ∼ 2018

Barney Curt Choate, 65, of Bridge City, passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at Choate Fork Ranch. Barney was born on June 18, 1952, to the late James Norwood Choate and Hattie Louise Norsworthy Choate in Port Arthur. He was an instrument technician for DuPont in Orange and was employed with DuPont for 30 years.

If you are reading this you know how much Barney enjoyed hunting, fishing, the great outdoors and a good “story”, which may or may not be true or exaggerated. He is now flashing his infectious smile down on us from heaven. He is sharing his stories and spreading laughter with his new-found friends and loved ones who reached heaven before him. He will be dearly missed by many, but he wouldn’t want us to be sad. He would want us to take a minute to remember a story he told us that made us laugh, so we can replace our sadness and pain with a smile and laugh.

Those left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Wendi Schiro and husband, Antony of San Antonio; son, Caleb Choate and wife, Norma of San Antonio; grandchild, Gavin Schiro; sister, Bonnie Landry and husband, Joe of Little Cypress. He is preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank you for all of the love and prayers you have been sending our way. May God Bless You All!

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Friday, January 19, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with the funeral service to begin at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bobby Contreras officiating, at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland. The interment will be at Low Chapel, on Alpine Road-FM 242 in Hemphill, TX at 3:00 p.m.

I have not seen Barney since he retired but what memories. Did not see him too much at D'Plant but when I did, they were memorable. Grew up within a few streets of him, attended same schools and then worked around him - I don't know what he was doing while I was working. But, it took a long time to forgive him for ratting me out. I can still see him pointing at me across the hall at Port Neches Elementary disclosing the tackler of the" tacklee", Chris Knight - broken or badly sprained ankle during "touch" football. Miss him . Oh Barney, oh Barney, although we have been out of touch for so long, I have never forgotten your beautiful face and sweet disposition. You were one-of-a-kind, dear brother, a priceless jewel to all that were fortunate enough to know you. Until we meet again, "long may you run". By-the-way, Barney, you rock that black hat, my friend.

Barney and I went to school together and graduated together from PN-G High. He was one of the kindest boys --- and later one of the kindest men --- I've ever known. A true gentleman. After years of being out of touch, Barney and I reconnected a year or so ago on Facebook. That was grand, and I enjoyed it. He offered to send me some venison sausage recently, but since I live in Prague, Czech Republic, we decided the international postal costs might make it the most expensive sausage in the world. We had a good chuckle over that. But knowing Barney, he'd have sent it anyway if I hadn't told him not to. A wonderful man and fine friend. Christopher Cook

I did not know Barney as a adult, but as a young man in high school I did. He was a good friend. Sorry for your loss.
