Calvin E. Turner, 89, of Vidor, Texas passed away on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at his residence with his loving family by his side. He was born on February 12, 1925 in Huntington, Texas to the late Jesse Preston Turner and Linnie Alexander. He was retired from Texaco as a supervisor.
Calvin served in the U.S. Navy aboard the Heavy Cruiser, U.S.S. Portland for 31/2 years during WWII, in the Pacific theater, earning 7 Asiatic-Pacific battle stars and 2 Philippine Liberation medals. He also witnessed the surrender by the Japanese at the Turks, which took place on the Quarterdeck of the USS Portland. All U.S. Navy service was on the USS Portland except for 2 months at “Boot Camp” at San Diego, California.
Calvin is survived by his daughters, “Jeannie” Hopper and husband, Mark of Austin, TX; Nancy T. Bean and husband, Bob of Mont Belvieu, TX; grandchildren, Calvin Bradford Hopper of Boston, MA; Jason L. Dalby of Kingwood, TX; Dana Cotter of Austin, TX; 9 Great-Grandchildren; and sister, Sandra Turner Bilbrey of Port Neches, TX. He is also survived by the love of his life, Marinell Dominick and her daughter, Jay Lavergne, and her husband, George Lavergne, and their two sons, Mark and Randall who were loved as grandsons. Calvin is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Midred Alice Turner; and daughter, Theresa Lynn Turner.
Funeral services will be held at Melancon’s Funeral Home 1605 Avenue H in Nederland on Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Ronnie Webb officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County in Nederland. A gathering of the family and friends will be held from 12:00 Noon to 2:00 p.m. prior to the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Southeast Texas Humane Society in Beaumont, Texas.
