Charles Ray Bennefield

Charles Ray Bennefield, 75, of Port Neches, Texas died Saturday, March 20, 2010 at Christus Dubuis Hospital in Port Arthur, Texas. Charles Ray was born in San Augustine, Texas and resided in Port Neches for fifty three years. He served his country in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He served thirty six years as a policeman for the Port Neches Police Department from 1959-1995. He was most remembered as Chief of Police for thirty of those years. He is survived by his sons, Charles Scott Bennefield and wife, Julie of Pensacola, FL; Christian R. Bennefield and wife, Elizabeth of Port Neches, TX; three grandchildren, Christopher Ray Bennefield of Port Neches, TX; Stephen Scott Bennefield of Albuquerque, NM; Whitney Dianne Bennefield of Pensacola, FL; and half-sisters, Ann Burkhalder of Magnolia, TX; Ludie Harris of Texarkana, TX and Eunice Young of Dallas, TX. Charles Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy Jo Bennefield; daughter Rebecca Allison Carlson; parents William Elmer, Sr., and Willie Mae Bennefield; granddaughter, Ashley Lauren Bennefield; brother, William Elmer, Jr.; half-brother, W.H. Bennefield; and half-sister, Bonnie Kelly. Funeral service will be held Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Port Neches with Rev. Scott Bennefield officiating and Dr. David Mahfouz assisting under the direction of Levingston Funeral Home Port Neches. Entombment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park. Port Neches Police Department officers will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2010 at First Baptist Church in Port Neches.
