When I first walked into First Christian Church in July of 2012, I was just a new face looking for a place to belong. It didn’t take long to realize I had found more than a job at FCC but a second home and so much of that was because of the incredible warmth of Charlie. As an Elder, Charlie didn’t just hold a title; he lived out a calling of hospitality. Alongside Lavelle, he was a pillar of our church community, teaching us all what it meant to lead with a servant’s heart. Of course, what we will all remember most—what became his legendary ministry —were Charlie’s hugs. A hug from Charlie was a sanctuary. He didn’t just shake your hand; he pulled you into a hug that told you that you were safe and you were home. It was his way of sharing God’s grace without saying a single word. It was a gift he gave so freely, and it defined the spirit of our church family for so many years. To Lavelle: Thank you for sharing him with us. The warmth Charlie shared remains a light in all our hearts. We find comfort knowing he is now receiving the ultimate welcome, held in the arms of the One he served so well. God bless you. “Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
