Known to family and friends as "Chuck" or "Charlie," Charles Green Smith Jr. had a zest for life and passion for story telling. Like a Jimmy Buffet song, he often dreamed of escaping on his sailboat. On November 25, 2013, Charles left this earth to begin his next adventure. Born on May 7, 1952 in Beaumont, Texas, Charles was an area native until he graduated from Port Neches Groves high school. From there he attended the University of Houston, receiving a Bachelor's Degree in fine arts. He then went on to have a successful career as a piping designer for a number of refineries in the area as well as across the country. Among Charles' many passions, he loved to paint and his talent was recognized by numerous galleries in the Houston area. Charles is survived by his daughter Lindsey and her husband (and son-in-law) Jim Mathias, brother Michael Lee Smith and sister Ginger Smith Temple. He is proceeded in death by his father Charles Green Smith Sr. and mother Helen Elizabeth Smith. Visitation will be Friday, November 29, from 10:00 to 11:00 am at Levingston Funeral Home in Port Neches. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am with a graveside service at Oak Bluff Memorial Park.

Chuck, my brother. I will miss you so much. You did have such an extraordinary talent for art. I always admired that. I will treasure the painting I have from you. You had an adventurous soul just like daddy did. You enjoyed life to the fullest. May you rest in peace. I love you.

Chuck was a gentle spirit. I was in art school at Lamar with Chuck & Denny Ross. Later we all worked together as model builders in Houston. Denny called us all "... his circus friends!" In addition to being a wonderful artist he also was a great surfer. With our limited wave selection, Chuck could shred. He had a painting of Rollover Pass in the Luby's in Jefferson City which was fantastic. When Denny & I would mention Chuck, Denny would always mention that painting. The last time I saw Chuck was at Denny's funeral, he was loyal to the end. One day the "Circus Friends" will get back together and what a wonderful day that will be.

Chuck, there is certainly a huge hole in my heart now. I love and respect you dearly. We learned together that any job worth doing is worth doing right. It was a total honor and pleasure making memories with you. I have thought of our times together often over the years and it always brings a smile to my face. Your loyalty was unmatched. You never told me, no. You were always there for me. Thanks, bud. Like Denny used to say: "that boy has more than a hairy arm up his sleeve". That was you, a little mischievous, but always fun. Mike, Ginger, and Lindsey, I am so sorry for your loss. Hang in there, we are going to see Chuck again. Chuck, I'll catch you on the flip side, brother. You rock!!!!!!!

Many fun memories, with my friend Chuck, came to mind when hearing of our loss. Surfing trips, fishing trips, hunting trips, and just hanging out and enjoying life. We are so truly blessed that Chuck shared his life with us.

Chuck and I grew up together. Neighbors, childhood buddies. So many lovely memories of that time, too many to recount. But this is important: He had the natural talent as a visual artist that is very, very rare. As early as elementary school he was drawing extraordinary pictures---imaginative, sometimes funny, always full of vitality---that astonished us all. Later, when he began painting, his work was remarkably true and good. Such a gift. Yet I think Chuck preferred to go fishing more than anything else. I used to tell him, "Stop fishing. Paint!" Well, he did both. And in truth, he was an accomplished fisherman, too. I send my best to his brother Mike, sister Ginger, and daughter Lindsey.

Chuck, I will always remember you as an amazing artist and cook. To this day you made the best shrimp gumbo I have ever eaten. I enjoyed listening to your childhood stories, boating adventures, and travel expeditions while watching your eyes light up as you reminiscenced on the past. I will miss you.

Lindsey, we extend our condolences to you and your family. We were taken with your dad's warmth and friendliness meeting him for the first time at your wedding. We enjoyed hearing of the adventures on his beloved sailboat and admired his paintings hanging in your home. These should remind you and others of his exceptional talent and creative spirit. May he be at peace with the Lord.

My heart breaks for the loss of Chuck so early in life. Growing up, I loved visiting my Smith relatives in Port Neches and especially hanging out with Chuck and Mike, a big thrill for an awkward little girl. Chuck always did have the most amazing smile! Throw Uncle Charlie into the mix, and there was never a dull! Ginger and Mike, I love you! You and all your family are in our prayers. With love, sheryl
