Obituary

Charles R. Smith,79, of Port Neches, Texas passed away Thursday, May 23, 2024, at The Medical Center of Southeast Texas in Port Arthur. Born on October 21, 1944, in Orange, Texas to Ona and Charles Smith.

Charles was a proud graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in 1962, where he laid the foundation for his successful career. Charles was a research technician at Texaco and retired after thirty-five years of service.

Beyond his professional life, Charles had a deep-rooted love for drag racing, which he pursued fervently for twenty-one years. His enthusiasm for the sport brought him joy and fulfillment, reflecting his adventurous spirit and love for thrill.

Charles' proudest accomplishments include serving as the Past President of Port Arthur Evening Sertoma and achieving the title of first runner-up at the Cajun Nationals in 1979. These achievements symbolize his dedication to community service and his competitive spirit.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Ona Mae (McLain) Smith and Charles Emory Smith; twin grandsons, Dustin and Rustin Smith; and great-granddaughter, Justyn Lyn Dufreshe.

Charles is survived by his wife of thirty-two years, Laura Smith of Port Neches, TX; son, Greg Smith and wife Michelle of Port Neches, TX; and his mother, Vivian Funicelli of Port Neches, TX; stepdaughter, Kim Jackson of Port Neches, TX; stepson, Darin Borne and wife Kellie of Fannett, TX; along with seven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren who will cherish memories of him forever.

In celebrating Charles' life, a Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Charles' Life to begin at 2:00 p.m., at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Groves.

Serving as pallbearers for Mr. Smith include Randy Jackson, Noah Jackson, Cutter Jackson, Hayden Melanson, Tanner Melanson, and Keith Borne.

In honoring Charles R. Smith's memory and legacy, we recognize his contributions to both his profession and personal passions. He will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched during his time with us. May he rest in peace knowing that he was loved and respected by many.

Charles was well liked by my parents and myself. His parents were the best and his daddy gave Mother ducks to cook when he hunt. Great memories and great friends for a lifetime.
