In loving memory of Curtis Ray Humphrey, Sr., who graced this world with his presence from October 29, 1945, until January 23, 2025. Born in Hillsboro, Texas, Curtis was a dedicated individual known for his unwavering work ethic and passion for family. He devoted many years as an operations foreman at Ameripol Synpol, where he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues through his hard work and commitment.
Curtis proudly served our nation for 16 years in the National Guard, followed by a tenure in the Army Reserve. His dedication to service was a reflection of his strong character and the values he upheld throughout his life.
Curtis was married to the love of his life Gaylan for 57 years. He enjoyed the life they built on faith, hard work and the love of his family. He was so proud to be the father of Ray and Tad. As his family grew so did his love for everyone.
He never met a stranger and made everyone feel welcomed and loved. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and community. Out of all the names and titles he had in his life, Pawpaw was his favorite. He loved his grandchildren and supported them in every way. He was their biggest fan and their hero. His days were filled with dance recitals, cheerleading, softball, baseball, and football games, fishing tournaments weigh-ins, crabbing, and many stops for ice cream at DQ.
He enjoyed time spent hunting, fishing and crabbing with his sons and grandsons. It was never about the deer or the fish, it was about the memories made with that family he cherished.
Curtis was a faithful and active member of First United Methodist Church of Groves. He served when and where he could and loved his church family.
Curtis enjoyed classic cars and was a big part of the Groves Pecan Festival Car Show held each year that supported different organizations. He also held Classic Cars for Christ Show for the First United Methodist Church of Groves.
Curtis leaves behind his cherished wife, Gaylan Beebe Humphrey, whose love and partnership were integral to his life journey. He is also survived by his two beloved sons, Ray Humphrey and his wife Donna, and Tad Humphrey and his wife Lori, along with his adored grandchildren, Grant Humphrey and his wife Chloe, Abbey Humphrey, and Delaney Humphrey. The joy and pride that Curtis found in his family were evident to all who knew him, as he often spoke of their accomplishments and shared warm memories.
Curtis is also remembered by his sisters, Donna Baller and Cindy Munger, and his brother, Danny Porter. He held each of them close to his heart, sharing laughter and support throughout their lives together.
Curtis was preceded in death by his mother, Genelle Isabell, who he held in fond remembrance. Her legacy of strength lived on in her son, as he navigated life with integrity and compassion.
