Dezire “Dez” Hebert, 87, of Groves, passed away Thursday, January 12, 2023. Dez was born July 17 1935 in Maurice, Louisiana to the late Ovey and Philomine Hebert. Dez was retired from Sherwin-Williams Paint Store in Port Arthur as the Manager with 35 years of service. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Groves for many years, and was a member of the Port Neches Knights of Columbus Council 2461.
Dez is survived by his children, Denise Hebert of Groves, Tim Hebert and his wife Angie of Port Neches, Desiree Hebert of The Woodlands, and Maria Hebert of Orange; his sister, Helen Boudin of Scott, Louisiana; his grandchildren, Shelby, Elyse, Karissa, Morgan, and Laurel.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Billie Besse, his brothers, Adles Hebert, George Hebert, Dules Hebert, Abbie Hebert, and Melvin Hebert; his sisters, Ednes, Gertie, Elzedia, Elzia, Oveling, Lorena, and Daisy.
Whether he was Dez, Mr. Hebert, Uncle Dez, Dad, or Pa to you didn’t matter. “He treated me like one of his own,” someone recently said of him, and that was invariably true. He might have taught you how to clean a fish, frog, crab, squirrel, duck, or deer after you went hunting with him. If you’re really lucky, you might have had the chance for him to take you huntin’ Naugahyde. Odds are, he taught you to fish which probably included spitting on the bait--you know, to make the bait work right. Perhaps more than the boat and the blind, he enjoyed his time with friends and family at Ivanhoe most.
As much as the lessons we learned from him and time we shared with him, we remember him for who he was. We remember him for his smile that came with a twinkle in his eye and the feeling that he’d just been up to something. We remember the laugh that came from the deepest part of him that he, in turn, often sparked in others with his antics and jokes. His love was given without hesitation to whomever was lucky enough to be around. Perhaps this is what we will miss him for the most. Thank you for showing us the way.
A gathering of the family and friends will be Tuesday January 17, 2023 beginning at 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:00 p.m. A Christian Vigil Service will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Dez’s children invite all friends and family to join them at the Port Neches KC Hall at 700 Central Drive off Merriman. The Knights are generously returning the favor to Dez of cooking him a gumbo. Of course, we’ll need your help eating it, so we hope you will join us.
