Don Craig Anderson

1950 ∼ 2025

Don Craig Anderson

Donald Craig Anderson, born on May 21, 1950, was a man whose life was defined by love, dedication, and an unwavering spirit. He departed this world on January 18, 2025, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by many.

Don was an amazing father & devoted grandfather.

He was known for his kindness, sense of humor, strong work ethic & unwavering love for his family and friends.

His life can't simply be measured by words but is measured by those whose lives have been enriched with his presence. Don could be best remembered in the stories shared around a fire after a long day of fishing on his favorite lake. He leaves behind a legacy of strength and resilience.

He started his career in the maritime industry on the push boats on the Mississippi River prior to 1973, then finishing out his 37 year career shoreside in the maritime industry as an elected official, representing Seafarers International Union, where he retired as Assistant Vice President of the West Coast for SIU. He always loved bass fishing and working on anything with an engine.

Raised with love in a family that instilled strong values, Don was the cherished son of Betty Shutika and Charles Anderson. He also held in high regard his stepfather, George Shutika, the man who played an instrumental role during his upbringing. Don's relationship with his family shaped him into the person he became.

Don's commitment to family was evident throughout his lifetime. He is survived by a wonderful family, which includes his sons, Benjamin Anderson and his wife Amber and Austin Anderson and his wife Charlene, and his grandsons,  Benjamin Anderson II and Silas Anderson.

Don is remembered fondly by his siblings: Ricci Anderson and his wife Lisa; James Anderson; Sharon Reynolds and her husband Jerome; David Shutika and his wife Robin; and George Shutika II. Each sibling carries a piece of Don's spirit, bound by shared memories and a profound connection to their late brother.

As we take a moment to reflect on the life of Don Craig Anderson, we celebrate a man who was a devoted husband, father, and brother, whose presence touched the lives of many. His warmth, humor, and steadfastness will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. Don will be deeply missed but fondly remembered, an integral part of the lives he influenced so profoundly.

Don had a larger than life sense of humor and was an enthralling storyteller. He regaled us with “sea stories” that had nothing to do with the sea. Thanks for the laughs, the memories, and the Brotherhood, Donnie! Fair winds and following seas…

Please accept my sincere condolences to Don’s family in this difficult time. May you be comforted and reassured that you have the full empathy and solidarity of the Brotherhood of the Sea. I spent many a day working the waterfront with Don and learned firsthand that he was a skilled labor leader, negotiator and, as President Heindel aptly stated, a kind, generous man who was always there to help those in need. Don was a dedicated family man and had a large extended family. May you all find peace and comfort knowing that Don will be remembered and respected as a Father, Brother, Friend and Shipmate. Fair winds and following seas amigo. Dean Corgey January 26, 2025

I am deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend, brother and colleague, Donny Anderson. Donny was a man of immense generosity and kindness, always opening his home to seafarers in need—whether they required a place to rest or simply a warm meal. His compassion knew no bounds, welcoming everyone, whether he knew them personally or not. Those fortunate enough to stay with Donny may have even been treated to a trip to his favorite fishing spot, where they could experience firsthand his passion for reeling in a prized Texas bass. Donny’s presence, friendship, and unwavering dedication to our brotherhood will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
