Donna Ruth Fontaine, affectionately known as "Nanny," passed away on November 24, 2023, in Lumberton, Texas. She was born on February 7, 1949, in Port Arthur, Texas. Donna was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Donna's greatest joy in life came from being "Nanny" to her three adoring grandchildren. She was a devoted and loving presence in their lives. Donna resided in Nederland, Texas for most of her life. She possessed a remarkable singing voice and was incredibly skilled at sewing.
Donna's musical talent extended beyond personal enjoyment; she was an instrumental part of a gospel music legacy. For many years, she served as the organist for Victory Temple church in Beaumont, Texas. Her beautiful voice stood out in the choir, and she will always be remembered for her heartfelt rendition of "There's A Promise Coming Down That Dusty Road."
Family played an essential role in Donna's love for music. In her younger days, she traveled with her original Bethel Family group and later joined forces with her daughter and sister to form "The Bethels" family Southern Gospel trio. Together they ministered through song for eight years and created cherished memories for their audiences. Some of their most popular songs included "What A Gathering," "Homecoming," and "He Chose This Valley."
Donna had an exceptional gift for connecting with people - she truly was a people person. Everywhere she went, she left a lasting impression on those she encountered and delighted in making new friends. It was evident that she genuinely relished getting to know others.
Her love for Jesus Christ knew no bounds; Donna dedicated much of her time to studying the Bible and reading Christian books. Prayer was a vital part of her daily routine, and she found solace and strength in communing with God. Many people benefited from her insightful Bible studies, which she graciously shared.
Donna Ruth Fontaine is survived by her loving family, including her children, Wendy Showalter and Shane Fontaine, as well as her grandchildren: Lane Welch and his wife Abbie, Kailey Showalter, and Karly Showalter. Her legacy will live on through them. Additionally, Donna leaves behind a great-grandchild who is eagerly anticipated.
She was preceded in death by her father, Chester O'Neal Bethel; her mother, Betty Ruth (Simpson) Bethel; and her husband, Robert Barry Fontaine.
Donna will also be deeply missed by her surviving siblings: Debbie Foreman and her husband Roger, as well as Deanna Morgan and her husband Kenneth. Their love and support brought immeasurable comfort to Donna throughout her life.
A visitation will be held on November 28th, 2023, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 1605 Avenue H in Nederland, Texas. Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects during this time of remembrance.
A funeral service to celebrate Donna's life will take place on November 29th, 2023. The service will commence at 10:00 AM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Nederland. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.
Pallbearers include Lane Welch, Hunter Wilkerson, Clint Wilson, Hunter Bittle, Kole Morgan, and Kenan Morgan.
A special heartfelt thank you to Intrepid Hospice and nurses, Madison Kane and Shameka Wallace.
Donna Ruth Fontaine will forever be remembered for her kind heart, infectious spirit, and unwavering faith. She touched the lives of many through her music ministry and genuine love for people. As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, let us cherish the memories she has gifted us and carry forward the lessons she taught us about love and devotion.
