Doris June Stukey

June 12, 1926 — September 1, 2023

Doris June Stukey, 97, joined her Lord and Savior on Friday, September 1, 2023, at home with her family at her side. Doris was born on June 12, 1926 in Pleasant View Township, Kansas to Ralph and Maggie Betz Fitzjohn. Doris grew up on a small rural farm in Joplin, Missouri and graduated from Carl Junction High School near Joplin. Doris married Wesley Don Stukey on October 15, 1946 after Don’s return from serving in World War II. Their marriage continued 62 years until Don’s passing in 2009. Doris had 5 siblings, Betty Endicott, Billie Call, Harold Fitzjohn, Retha Moser and Melvin Fitzjohn.
Don and Doris had 4 children, Daryl, Dennis and twins Debra and David. In 1961, the family moved to Nederland, Texas from Carl Junction. The family joined Seventh Street Baptist Church in 1961 and have continued to serve and worship there. Doris was a homemaker and worked for 13 years at the C.O. Wilson Junior High cafeteria. Doris has shown her love for her Savior, family and church through the years. She had the spirit of a servant and the heart of a giver. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and “adopted grandmother.” Doris loved children and taught the 4- and 5-years old Sunday School Class for over 50 years where she was admired and loved by her “little people” for her clean and sharp crayons. She was involved in many functions of the church, including WMU, vacation bible school, choir member, fellowship committee and the Nursing Home and Home Bound Ministry. During the Fifth Sunday Night Singing, everyone discovered mom could whistle hymns. So, Mom participated several more times. She also enjoyed singing Happy Birthday to anyone having their special day. After retirement, Don and Doris enjoyed the new friends and fellowship at the Ritter Senior Center.
Doris is preceded in death by her parents; beloved husband, Wesley Don Stukey; children, Dennis Stukey and David Stukey; grandchild, Kristen Nicole Stukey; sisters, Betty Endicott, Billie Call and Retha Moser; brother, Harold Fitzjohn.
Those left to cherish Doris’ memory include her son, Daryl Stukey and daughter, Debra Stukey both of Nederland; brother, Melvin Fitzjohn and wife Gladys of North Carolina, and many nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 10:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., with a Celebration of Doris’ Life to begin at 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Seventh Street Baptist Church; 200 7th Street, Nederland, Texas. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.
Daryl and Debra would like to thank Hospice Plus and all mom’s caregivers for their love and support. Special thanks to Lori, Terri, Tasha, Amanda, Tori, Denise, and Dr. Kaissi.
