Dorothy Frances Henry was born on January 22, 1920 in Port Arthur Texas and entered eternal rest on October 1, 2016. The daughter of Thornton Francis Chevis and Nina Young Chevis, she was a member of the 1938 Class of Thomas Jefferson High School, and continued her education at Port Arthur Business College (now Lamar State College). Following her graduation from the College, she went to work at E. Baker Insurance and Real Estate in the Port Arthur Adams Building, and later served as Rotary Club Sweetheart and President of the National Secretaries Association in Port Arthur. She was a childhood member of the Methodist Temple, and after marriage, she joined the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant (now Providence Church) where she taught Sunday School for many years and served on the Board of Deacons. While her children were of school age, she was actively involved in their education as President of the Robert E. Lee Elementary PTA, where she received an honorary Life Membership. She was also active in the Woodrow Wilson Jr High and Thomas Jefferson High School PTA. She served as President of the Federation of Women's Clubs (Department Club), President of the Trivium Club, the Terrance Garden Club, the Rose Hill Garden Club, and the Women's Auxiliary of the Port Arthur Country Club. She also served on the Boards of the American Red Cross and Community Concert Association. A Life Member of the Lamar State College Alumni Association, she participated in founding the revised alumni organization, serving as its President for two years. She was a member of the Historical Society of Port Arthur and served over eight years as a volunteer in the gift shop at the Museum of the Gulf Coast. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, her brother Dr. Edward G. Chevis, son Dennis E. Henry, and husband of 60 years Earl Henry, all of Port Arthur. In addition to many nieces and nephews, survivors include her sister Beverly Perkins Harrell of Woodville, son Thomas E. Henry and wife Rebecca, grandson Thomas Christopher Henry, step grandson Shaun Boudreaux, his wife Michelle and their daughter Bailey, all of Orange. Our Family wishes to thank the entire staff at Answered Prayers for their daily care, love and support of Dorothy during the last year, and we also appreciate and acknowledge Heart to Heart Hospice, and her previous personal care givers. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. A celebration of life service is planned for 1:30 on Oct 16, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, Slade Chapel Orange, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her favorite charities such as the Port Arthur Historical Society, Museum of the Gulf Coast, Salvation Army or the American Heart Association.
