Dr. Thomas Richard Konjoyan

1951 ∼ 2026

Dr. Thomas Konjoyan, known as “Tom,” age 74, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Tom made Southeast Texas his home beginning in 1985, where he built a life of service, love, and deep community connection.

Tom was predeceased by his father, Arthur Richard Konjoyan, and his mother, Betty Jane Quistberg. He is survived by his devoted wife of almost 31 years, Carolyn Konjoyan; his daughter, Lauren Konjoyan Castaneda, and her husband, Kevin Castaneda; his stepchildren, Crystal Bean and her husband, Ryan Bean, James Ryan Morgan and his wife, Sarah Morgan. He was a proud and loving grandfather—“Pawpaw”—to seven grandchildren: Ella, Jaxon, Case, Peyton, Charlee, Maddi, and Ally. He is also survived by his beloved Welsh Corgi, Suzie, who was never far from his side.

A beloved physician, husband, father, and grandfather, Tom was known for being hardworking, passionate, quietly thoughtful at times, and unfailingly loving and supportive. He graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and went on to earn his medical degree from Kansas City University of Medicine in Kansas City, Missouri. He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Darnall Army Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, and served as an Emergency Medicine Physician at Bayne-Jones Army Hospital from 1982 to 1985. In 1982, he was awarded the Army Achievement Medal for his role in responding to a mass casualty incident involving a helicopter crash.

Board-certified in Emergency Medicine in 1984, Tom practiced medicine for over 40 years and served as the Medical Director for several hospital-based emergency departments throughout the Golden Triangle. His dedication to patient care, leadership, and mentorship left a lasting impact on countless colleagues and patients, including his daughter, Lauren, who was inspired to follow in his footsteps and now practices medicine as well.

Beyond his medical career, Tom found joy in music and faith as an active singer and instrumentalist with the local praise band “Higher Praise” at Procter Baptist Church. He also loved training and playing with Suzie, traveling, museums, gardening, reading, sharing a good meal, watching the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics, car shows, playing pool, attending concerts and sporting events, and playing the banjo.

The visitation and service will be held at Procter Baptist Church in Port Arthur, TX, with visitation on Friday, February 6th from 5 PM- 7 PM and the service on Saturday, February 7th at 2 PM with burial to follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, TX. A meal will be shared at Procter Baptist Church following the burial.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to NMDP, the global leader in bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants for blood cancers and disorders.

Tom will be remembered for his steady presence, his servant’s heart, and the deep love he had for his family and community. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Tommy K as we called him growing up in Connecticut was my (Swedish) cousin and lived across the street from us. He taught me how to plan and think game strategy at 8 years old. He was always smiling and fun to be with. I was told he plan to visit Connecticut, but the Covid pandemic prevented that visit. RIP cousin!
