Eliseo Charles Trevino, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2024, at the age of 78. Born on March 18, 1946, in Port Arthur, Texas, Charles was renowned for his kind spirit and devotion to those around him.
Charles retired from Texaco Refinery after an impressive twenty-eight years of service, exemplifying a work ethic that inspired many. His commitment to his job was only surpassed by his compassion for others, a trait that shone through particularly during his time at the nursing home. He found joy within the serene surroundings at Stevens Nursing Home in Hallettsville, Texas, often lightening the day of those around him with small gestures. It became a routine for him to share a part of his heart with those caring for him; he would generously give money to the nurses for them to bring him a hamburger, fueling not just his appetite but also the camaraderie of his surroundings. He spent countless hours helping fellow residents, wheeling them to the dining hall or wherever they needed to go. His friends affectionately knew him as “Gumbo,” a name that reflected not just his culinary favorite but also his warm and nurturing nature.
Charles’ life was steeped in his devout Catholic faith. As an altar server, he embodied the teachings of love, charity, and kindness, fostering connections that lasted a lifetime. His unwavering faith provided him with solace and strength, further buttressing the compassion he extended toward his family and friends. He looked forward with joy to the visits from his loved ones, which brightened his days and reminded him of the rich familial bonds he cherished deeply.
A proud veteran who served in the United States Navy, Charles carried a strong sense of patriotism that formed his values and perspectives throughout his life. His dedication to his country was met with the same fervor he showed to his family and friends, communities where he planted seeds of kindness and goodwill.
Charles’ educational journey began at Bishop Byrne High School, where he honed his abilities not only as a student but as an athlete, playing football and baseball with a particular talent as a catcher. These formative experiences shaped his character, perseverance, and a spirit of teamwork that transcended sports and became a hallmark of his personality.
He leaves behind a loving family who will forever celebrate his memory: his siblings, Carlos Trevino and his wife Linda of Nederland; Alfred "Tony" Trevino and his wife Susan of Nederland; Donny Trevino of Lumberton; and a host of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Mary (Sandoval) Trevino and Gregorio Trevino, Sr., and his brother, Gregorio “Georgie” Trevino, Jr. His departure leaves a void felt profoundly by those privileged to know him, but his legacy of kindness, compassion, and faith will continue to resonate.
