Ellen Margaret Gimon

1941 ∼ 2015

Ellen Margaret Gimon passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at Baylor Saint Luke’s Hospital in Houston, Texas surrounded by family. She was 74 years old.

Ellen was born first daughter of Lola Mae and Charles Simon Louvier in Port Arthur, Texas on January 26, 1941. She had one sister, Patricia Louvier Dent.

Ellen graduated co-valedictorian of Port Neches-Groves High School in 1959 and then from Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1963 with a bachelor of science degree in home economics and a secondary and vocational certificate. At Sam Houston she ranked in the top five percent of her graduating class and belonged to Alpha Chi, Kappa Delta Pi and the Kappa Delta sorority. The very next year she married her high school sweetheart, Walter Allen Gimon. Ellen started her teaching career as a homemaking teacher at Groves Junior High School. She took a break from teaching to have her two daughters, Mary and Jennifer. After earning her elementary certificate, she began teaching at Port Neches Elementary School in 1974. Ellen taught all subjects in the fifth grade for many years eventually specializing in science. She retired after twenty-two years of teaching at Port Neches Elementary School in 1996.

Ellen was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nederland, though her health had prevented her regular attendance for several years.

Ellen was a best friend, loving wife, caring mother and compassionate teacher. She could draw and paint with water colors. Her daughters remember the beautiful bulletin boards she created for her classroom. Ellen enjoyed her flowers and house plants, sewing and crocheting. She made her daughter Mary’s wedding dress. Ellen was also an avid reader and always had a crossword puzzle close by – though she would not do a sudoku.

Ellen is survived by her husband of fifty years, Walter Allen Gimon of Nederland, Texas; her sister, Patricia Louvier Dent and her husband, Ted of Nacogdoches, Texas; her daughter, Mary Kinsel and her husband, Gary of Carbondale, Illinois; and her daughter, Jennifer Gimon of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by her two grandchildren, Ian and Aubrey Kinsel.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, Lola Mae and Charles Simon Louvier.

A memorial service will be held at Melancon's Funeral Home in Nederland on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 2:00PM.

As a youngster I would walk thru backyards to visit Aunt Lola, Ellen and Patsy's mother. I loved those visits because Aunt Lola gave me a sense of normalcy. I wanted to walk thru the backyard to see what she and Uncle Bum were growing in the yard, especially something to eat. One day I was attendihg Groves Junior High open house where I was attending 8th grade and some young ladies on an assignment from El Margarets class were suppose to introduce new people to her. As they brought me to her class to introduce me I let them go thru the whole spill of introduction as I smiled at El Margaret. Then we both opened up that we were cousins. That was an unforgettable moment. To elaborate on her career as a teacher, my next door neighbor was one of her students as I noticed that she was listed as a faculty member in his 8th grade yearbook. I visit her parents along with my mother at Oak Bluff Memorial Park to remind me of them. Patsy and El Magaret will always be a lasting an influence on me thru their mother. Steven DeRoche

Ms Gimon was my 5th grade teacher and she was my favorite teacher. Always so kind and patient with all of us.

Mrs. Gimon had a big influence on me as my fifth grade teacher, and I'm sure she influenced many other students for the better, as well. She did a lot to cultivate my interest in science, which eventually led to my job as a physicist. She even got me a VERY nice packet from NASA containing beautiful space posters and photographs - I think I still have most of them! May the Lord bless and comfort your family at this sad time.

Our family had a small reunion a couple years ago and so glad we did. I was able to visit with Ellen Margaret and Patsy at the reunion. I knew my cousins Ellen Margaret and Patsy more growing up, but thru the years we lost contact. It is always great to see your family for a short or long reunion. She was very smart and made the best of everything. She had great talent in sewing and making things. It seems all the Waller girls had a great talent in that also. I will cherish our moments and memories from the past. You were a great cousin. Now you will be united with our many relatives up at the Golden Gate. I say until our reunion comes enjoy your time with the family that went ahead of us. God has left great memories of you here back home. Your cousin, Bertha (Birdie) Thompson-Selk Birdiebcates@aol.com
