I couldn't be there today, but I was thinking of Gene and just had to sign the book again. Other than '50s and '60s memories, I recalled the last couple of times I saw him, and this would have been in the 1990s. Gene loved good food, and he was always a Chevrolet man, so it's fitting that I ran into him at Patillo's Bar-B-Q on Washington Boulevard one day, and another time while buying parts at the Chevy dealer in Beaumont. Most of our older friends are gone, and I'm sorry Gene has passed on, too. My sympathies to all who knew and loved him.

So saddened I was to learn of Gene's demise. When he finally came out of the coma after that terrible accident over 50 years ago, I thought he'd live forever. In the hospital, his mother was constantly by his side when I visited, and I'll never forget the sight of that wrecked Corvette. Gene and I worked together at Neches Butane, raced, and ran around together for years, and I could write a book about our exploits. We lost touch, but I'll always remember my friend, Eugene Wilson. My deepest sympathies go out to the family.
