Flora Mae Gillispie, 91, of Beaumont, passed away Saturday morning, April 29, 2023, in Fannett, Texas.
Flora was born January 29, 1932, in Rockdale, Texas, to Herbert and Lydia (Stork) Menn. She was married to Elton “Blue” Avery Gillispie on June 6, 1952, in Pasadena, Texas. She was a homemaker, a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, and a master Duplicate Bridge player with over 70 years of experience in Duplicate and Party Bridge and over 4,600 points. She traveled all over the United States and even as far as Bermuda playing Duplicate Bridge and could count every card in the deck.
Flora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Blue Gillispie; brothers, Edwin Herbert Menn, Rubin Adolph Menn, and Marvin Menn; sisters, Linda Lydia Tuma, Helen Christine Shoppa, Wallie Straach, and Lizzie Lucas.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Oliver and husband Dale of Fannett, and Kathy Wardenski and husband Jerry of Houston; four grandchildren, Christy Cary and husband Joe of Lake Jackson, Cheryl Martin of Houston, Katie Ray and husband Daniel of San Antonio, and Lea Ann Jeansonne of Houston; and six great grandchildren, Avery, Camryn, Corbin, Oliver, Elia, and one on the way.
Flora and Blue lived a successful 26-year military life in Guam, Alaska, Arkansas, Kansas, Fort Worth, and Nederland before retiring in 1968 and making the Golden Triangle their permanent home. Flora was a woman of faith and loved spending time with her family, playing games of all kinds and dancing to classic country andswamp pop music at the Mid-County Dance Club. She will be greatly missed.
A private “Celebration of Life” Memorial Service to Honor the Life and Memory of Flora Mae Gillispie will be held at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Melancon Funeral Home in Nederland, Texas.
