Floyd E. Hunter

Floyd Eugene Hunter, age 79, passed away peacefully on May 20, 2025, in Groves, Texas. He was born on June 21, 1945, in Beaumont, Texas, to Floyd Edgar and Geneva Hunter. Floyd was the fourth of five children in a close-knit and loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved sisters Barbara Salim (Mike) and Catherine McCarty (Fred), and his cherished partner, Jesse Garza, Jr. Floyd’s legacy of kindness and strength lives on in those who survive him: his sister Flora Irene Willey, his brother David Hunter (Carolyn), numerous nieces and nephews who adored him, and a very special young man, Michael McDonald, whom Floyd helped raise and loved as his own.

Floyd had a wonderful life. He was the proud owner of McDaniel’s Grocery in Port Bolivar for many years, where he served his community with dedication, warmth, and a generous heart. The store became a cherished gathering place—much like Floyd himself: steadfast, welcoming, and full of character.

In accordance with his wishes, Floyd will be cremated and his ashes will be buried in Rosewood Cemetery in Galveston, beside his forever partner, Jesse—a reunion long awaited and deeply treasured.

Floyd Eugene Hunter will be remembered always with love, gratitude, and joy by those fortunate enough to have known him.

I was very fortunate enough employed would come out to my place when he had his car when he was driving I know for two years solid every other weekend bring in micheal and his friends out to play. while they would ride the four wheeler or go fishing or just playing with my dogs. I’d have Floyd set up a spot in the shade where he’d always bring a book. He’d always read a book. Sometimes he’d come inside and we would just talk about nothing. It was very kind, and I loved him with all my heart. he was a very good person. He has taught me a lot since I’ve known him. I’ve spent a lot of times. I’ll never forget last year we took micheal in the summer of his friends trick-or-treating and I bought all three of us an outfit and Floyd was a pirate and he dressed up and it was the funniest thing ever. We rode around town while the kids trick-or-treating and we just talked and laughed. It was a great memory. I love you, Floyd. I know you’re with Jess and I know you’re having a good time and I lost my baby boy spot and I know he’s in heaven with you. Take care of him please thank you.

I am sorry to read of Floyd's passing. He gave me rides to Lamar State College of Technology (now Lamar University) back in the day. I haven't seen Floyd since that time -- sixty years ago now -- but I remember him as a very pleasant young man. It is gratifying to know that his life was a good one. Please accept my condolences.

Floyd was a great friend to me and family. We used to stop at his store and pick up snacks on our way to the pier.
