Gem Dorris, 29, of Spring, Texas formerly of the Groves/ Port Neches area passed away Monday, August 14, 2017 due to a motor vehicle accident. He was born July 27, 1988 in Beaumont, Texas to James Stacey Dorris and Marie Annette Scroggins. Gem was raised in Groves and graduated from Port Neches-Groves High School in 2007. He was currently enrolled as a full time student at Universal Technical Institute, 721 Lockhaven Drive, Houston, Texas 77073 where he maintained a 4.0 grade point average following his dreams in custom paint and body repair. He worked part time after school as a custom paint and body technician at Kellys Collision Center in Houston. Gem proudly served in the United States Marine Corp for 5 years with an honorable discharge. He received medals as an expert rifleman, medals and ribbons on War on Terrorism, service medal and ribbon on National Defense, Navy Sea Service Ribbon and Global War on Terrorism Ribbon, and also a medal for Marine Corp Afghanistan Campaign and the NATO Medal. Gem served as a Lance Corporal of MALS 29, MAG 29 and Marine Combat Training in India Company. His job in the military was helicopter ground support. He received many certifications for his expertise in the careers of both electrical and welding. Survivors include his mother, Annette Scroggins of Groves; father, Stacey Dorris of Port Neches. The heartbeat of his life were his daughters, Ellie Pearl Dorris who resides in Arizona and Autumn Ray Dorris who temporarily resides in Georgia. There is a third little Dorris on the way with mother, Julia Saye of League City. He is also survived by his sister, Blythe Squires and husband Chad of Nederland; brother, Gene Schauer of Groves; nieces and nephews, Trinity Squires, Callie Squires, Jaxson Squires, Khayman Schauer, and Rowan Schauer. A visitation for family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017 at Celebration of Life Church, 4600 Jimmy Johnson Blvd., Port Arthur, Texas followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Donnie Robbins officiating. Gem will be honored with a Military Graveside service at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, August 20, 2017 in his mothers hometown of Garrison, Texas at Holly Springs Cemetery, County Road 157, under the direction of Levingston Funeral Home in Groves.
