Gene Maxine Thomas, born on January 3, 1925, to Leland Walter Stratton and Ariena Hengst Stratton. They lived in Sapulpa, Oklahoma in Creek County and the family later moved to Eldorado, Arkansas, where Gene would meet Earnest Oneal Thomas Sr. at his brother's store in Stamps, Arkansas. This led to a beautiful marriage on July 29, 1944, that lasted 43 years. Gene passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, in Port Arthur, Texas. She was a devoted member of the community and a cherished soul who left a lasting impression on those who had the privilege to know her.
Earnest and Gene made their home in Port Arthur after the war. Earnest began working for Texaco Company and Gene dedicated many years of her life to her career at Port Arthur Abstract, where she was known for her diligent work ethic and warm personality. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she was a beloved figure within her family, who she adored dearly. Gene found profound joy in being actively involved in their lives, cherishing every moment spent with them until her health no longer permitted.
Her commitment extended beyond her family life; she embraced her role in the community as a dedicated cub scout den mother for three years, guiding and nurturing young minds. Additionally, she served as a youth counselor at her church for an impressive 25 years with her husband, Earnest. Together, they were lifelong members of Lakeview Methodist Church, never missing a Sunday service, later transferring their membership to The Temple Methodist, where their faith and community ties flourished.
Gene moved to Mauriceville to be near her son. She lived on his property for 20 years before moving, at age 96, to Bonne Vie Nursing Home in Port Arthur.
Gene's legacy is lovingly carried on by her son, Earnest O'neal "Tommy" Thomas Jr. and his wife, Judy; her grandchildren, April Wilson and her husband, Scott; Andrew Knight and his wife, Beverly "Buffy"; Richard Knight; Catie Herdon; Jodie Blotner and her husband, Michael; as well as her ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was predeceased in death by her husband of 43 years, Earnest O. Thomas, Sr.; her parents, Leland and Ariena Stratton; her beloved daughter, Peggy Gene Knight; and her brother, Buster Stratton. Gene's absence will be deeply felt by all who knew her, yet her spirit lives on through the lives she touched.
Visitation will take place on November 6, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 5601 39th St, Groves, Texas, 77619.
