George Truett Smith

George Truett Smith, 87, of Groves passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at Harbor Hospice in Beaumont, Texas surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 4, 1928 in Lucien, Mississippi to Walter Lee and Mae Smith. George graduated from West Lincoln High School and later enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea. He was employed by the Southwestern Bell/AT&T as a phone technician and retired with 37 years of service. George was a lifelong member of First Baptist Groves where he served as a deacon for over 30 years. He also served as a church trustee and on many leadership committees. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 17, 2015 at the First Baptist Church of Groves with Dr. Joe Worley, Reverend Charles Miller, and Reverend Linda Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park. George is survived by his wife of 63 years, Billie Marie Smith of Groves, three sons, Ricky Carroll Smith of Groves, Larry Paul Smith and wife, Robin of Groves, and George Stephen Smith and wife, Dora of Flower Mound, Texas. Six grandchildren, Leah Gunn, Laura Garner, Lana Walker, Garrett, Preston and Peyton Smith and ten great grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, James Carroll Smith of Bogue Chitto, Mississippi, David Lamar Smith of Madison, Mississippi and one sister, Nelda Mae Wallace of Bogue Chitto, Mississippi. He is preceded in death by two brothers, Eldon Paul Smith, Marshall Edgar Smith and two sisters, Fannie Lee Lewis and Helen Louise Smith from Mississippi. A visitation for family and friends will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday morning at the church.
