Gilbert Hugo Gutierrez

Gilbert Hugo Gutierrez, 53, of Nederland, TX gained his angel wings Sunday, April 7, 2019 at home surrounded by his family and some of his close friends.

Gilbert was born October 20, 1965 in Port Arthur, TX. He was a lifelong area resident and member of the Southeast Texas Circle of Hope, where he worked many hours at fundraisers for those in need. Gilbert was a Nederland Bulldog football alumni, which is how his love for the bulldogs began. He was an avid Nederland Bulldog fan, attending football, basketball, baseball, & softball games throughout the years. When the Bulldog went to the playoffs, Gilbert was always there cheering them on.

Survivors include his mother, Yolanda Gutierrez of Nederland; brothers, Guadalupe Gutierrez, Jr. and wife, Hilda of Nederland, TX, George Gutierrez of Nederland, TX, Richard (Ricky) Gutierrez and wife, Robyn of Lumberton, TX, and James Gutierrez and wife, Stacy of Rusk, TX; sister, Maga Gutierrez Kelly-Perez of Nederland, TX; nephews, Brandon Gutierrez, Jarrod Gutierrez, Christopher Gutierrez, Cody Gutierrez, Bryan Gutierrez, Jameson Gutierrez, Brent Kelly, and Noah Gutierrez; nieces, Rachel Behar, Jennifer Hayes, Casey King, Jamie McLain, Megan Gutierrez, Allyssa Kelly, and LeeAnn Kelly; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Gilbert is also survived by his very special friend, Krissi McGarrahan Duhon, who stayed by his side till the end; ex-sister-in-law, Debbie Holst Gutierrez; and by his three faithful companions, Bengi, Alli, and Chloe. He is preceded in death by his father, Guadalupe Gutierrez, Sr.

The service for Gilbert will be held Saturday, April 13, 2019 at First Baptist Groves, with a gathering of family and friends from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. followed by a memorial service to celebrate the life of Gilbert at 4 p.m. Chaplain Robert Pitree will be the officiant. Following the service, please join us for a dinner and celebration of Gilbert’s Life.

The family would like to say thank you to Gilbert’s caretakers from Compassion Hospice for the excellent care that they gave him and to the Southeast Texas Circle of Hope for allowing Gilbert to be a part of such an awesome group of people. The family would also like to thank Daymon LaPoint for all of his support and for organizing the Boss Burger get together in honor of Gilbert. Mike McFarland for all the time they spent at the Nederland Bulldog Sporting events, and all of the many friends and family members who came by and visited with Gilbert during his final weeks here on earth. Each and every visit made him so happy and it is what helped him to remain on this earth a little longer. Each day, after all his visitors had left, he would remark, “I didn’t know I had this many friends.” Rest in peace dear son, brother, uncle, & friend.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer society for Colon Cancer Research.

Gilbert was a nice guy and I was able to Spend time with him months ago for steak night at Dylans. We had a great visit. We also Kept in touch but I was unable to visit with him in his Last days in person due to me working out of state but he knew where I stood and how I felt about him. And not once did he ever want me to feel sorry for him. He was the bravest soul I have ever met knowing what he had to face in the days to come. He told me that day we meet up that he got the bad news but asked me not To say anything. My heart has been sad and breaking ever since but Gilbert fought a good fight and he was a giver so RIP my friend til we meet again!!!
