Gloria O'Bar Sharpless

Gloria O'Bar Sharpless, a devoted mother, dedicated community leader, and cherished member of the Port Arthur and Winter Park communities, passed away peacefully on March 12, 2026, at the age of 103. She departed this life at Westminster Properties in Winter Park, Florida, leaving behind a rich legacy of service and love.

Born on May 18, 1922, in Austin, Texas, Gloria was the beloved daughter of Oscar and Beatrice O’Bar. From an early age, she demonstrated a passion for education and the arts, culminating in her graduation from Austin High School and later earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas in 1943. During her time at the university, she was honored as the Sweetheart of the University in 1941 and maintained a lifelong connection with her alma mater as a Life Member of the Texas Exes.

Following her academic achievements, Gloria made Port Arthur, Texas, her home for nearly seven decades, from 1943 until 2012, when she and her husband, Robert “Bobby” Sharpless, relocated to Winter Park, Florida. Throughout her life, Gloria exhibited a steadfast commitment to her community. She served with distinction as a deacon at The Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and held leadership roles including past President of the Service League of Port Arthur and the Tejas Garden Club. Her spirited enthusiasm was reflected in her fondness for golf and saltwater fishing, pursuits that brought her joy and camaraderie.

Gloria’s family was a source of immense pride and joy. She is survived by her sons, Larry E. Sharpless of Huntington Beach, California, and Jerry L. Sharpless and his wife Grace of Orlando, Florida. Her cherished grandchildren include Rebecca Sharpless Daulton and her husband Patrick, along with their son Josiah; and Christopher David Sharpless and his wife Brianna, who have been blessed with two children, son Aden and daughter Ivy. These generations carry forward Gloria’s enduring spirit and values.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Robert “Bobby” Sharpless, and her son, Robert O. Sharpless, whose memories remain lovingly etched in the hearts of all who knew them.

A graveside service will be held on March 21, 2026, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, located at 3900 Twin City Highway, Groves, Texas. Friends and family are invited to honor Gloria’s memory and celebrate a life well-lived from 11:30 a.m. until noon.

Gloria Sharpless was indeed a woman of grace, charm and warmth. Even when she scowled at my beard, she couldn’t hide her friendliness and affection. It has been a blessing to know all the Sharpless family. I smile thinking of a favorite expression of Gloria’s beloved husband Bobby, the quintessential golfer:”Rhythm before power.” God bless and receive you, Gloria.
