Griffin Matthew Barnett

Griffin Matthew Barnett, age 6, passed away Friday, March 6, 2020. Griffin was born December 30, 2013 in Houston. Griffin had a contagious smile and vibrant personality. At only 6 years of age he became a testimony to many near and far. He loved the outdoors, he loved hunting and fishing, also swimming and swinging with his sister. He loved sports especially basketball and baseball. He had a passion for basketball games at Lamar University and cheering on his favorite player Colton Weisbrod. He was an avid Nederland Bulldog fan and enjoyed watching the Bulldogs play football and especially basketball, where he cheered on his favorites… Carter, Hayden, Chase, and Jake. He loved police so much and he had Santa bring his own police car where he spent many evenings driving his sister around. Orange and Big Foot was his favorite. Griffin loved his family and friends, his teacher Mrs. Gutierrez and his classmates. He always enjoyed the holidays and birthday parties spent with his family. He loved his entire medical staff at Texas Children’s Hospital and developed many special relationships, especially with his nurses Tanya, Bailey, Ellie, Amanda, Monica, Omar and Carrie.

A mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 13, 2020 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in Nederland with Father John Hughes officiating under the direction of Melancon’s Funeral in Nederland. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens of Jefferson County in Nederland. The family would also like to thank Griffin’s heart donor, Anthony “Petey” and the Contreras family for giving him this second chance of life he lived to the fullest. We will forever be grateful for this selfless gift you gave us.

Finally, the family would like to extend all their love and gratitude to the community and all of Griffin’s prayer warriors who have supported our family during this journey. Aaron and family, We are so very sorry for your loss. We truly, and honestly, know how you feel. There are no words that anyone can say that will help or ease the pain. However, Jesus will heal, as only he can, as the breaths go by. It isn’t day by day, but breath by breath. The waves will come and at first, they will be high and rough. As time goes by they do get smaller and not as fierce; they do still come, regardless. Hold onto and cherish every memory and talk about him all the time! Keep Jesus close and hold on even when the holding is tough(er)... Your sweet baby will continue going on thru you. We love you all and are always here for you! Much love and prayers going your way... Your friends in Christ, Curtis, Sabrina Estes and family

I remember the day we found out he wasn’t going to be able to be a normal kid due to his condition. We were wrong. So, so wrong. He loves to hunt, fish, play sports, rolls round in the dirt, tackle poor Addison and occasionally me but I didn’t mind it too much as he had 6 months of energy to get out and it ended up never running out. It hurts me to know that he’ll never be able to learn to drive, shoot his first deer, shoot his first duck. I can’t see him grow up, do well In school, make friends, just do what a little boy does. I can’t watch him walk on the court of field if his first high school ball game. He loved his family, all his friends, even people he didn’t know he still loved, that’s just who he was. Always wanting to go outside with Pawpaw or me or dragging Mr.Ted outside at thanksgiving. He loved his sister, even if that meant patting her on the head until she’d finally had enough, they always stood by each other no matter what. I loved having him at my basketball games and going to football with all my little babies. That two armed, two legged hug I always got at my games always made me so happy. Watching his little eyes track the basketball while I was smelling Addison’s or rubbing my little buddies back was comforting to know that he was enjoying the game. God took you way to early, your sister, momma, and daddy are all gonna be alright. They’re all strong like you buddy. Love you forever:heart:
