Gulabben M. Patel

Gulabben M. Patel, born on May 10, 1923 in India to Hirabhai Patel and Shitaben Patel, passed away on Sunday, April 19 at the age of 102, surrounded by the love of her family at her home in Port Neches, Texas. She lived a life defined by strength and deep devotion to those she loved.

Coming to America in a post-depression era, after the birth of her daughter, was no easy feat. But Gulab, known to many as Ma, embraced the opportunity and built a life through hard work and determination. She first settled in San Francisco, where her son was born, and her entrepreneurial spirit later led her to Louisiana and eventually Texas, where she spent the rest of her life. She believed each step along the way was for the betterment of future generations.

Her name, Gulab, means “rose” in Gujarati—a symbol of beauty, grace, and quiet strength. It was a name she carried so well, reflecting the way she lived her life and cared for those around her.

Ma had a way of making everyone feel loved and at home. Her presence brought comfort, and her wisdom guided her family through the years. Her faith remained at the center of her life, and she passed those traditions down to the generations who followed her.

In her final years, she was lovingly cared for by her son, Suresh (Ansuya), whose devotion and constant presence brought her comfort and peace until her last breath.

She is preceded in death by all of her siblings and her husband, Muljibhai M. Patel.

She is survived by her children, daughter Nirmala “Niru” (Ramesh) and son Sureshchandra “Suresh” (Ansuya); her beloved grandchildren, Rajesh (Ruchita), Rahul (Rachna), Rakhi (Vamsi), Pinkee (Devin), and Ritesh (Sherece); and her precious great-grandchildren, Riya, Ranee, Anjali, Rohan, Niyam, Jai, Miles, and Krish, along with her great grand-dog, Roger, who always sat on the recliner above her.

Her greatest joy was always her family, and she poured her love into each generation. She shaped the lives of those around her in lasting ways. Because of her, our family is closer and stronger today. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her memory will continue to live on in our hearts and in the family she built.
