H. A. “Tuffy” Nelson, Sr. today basks in perpetual light, having completed his almost 91-year earthly mission as a faithful follower of his Maker.
Clasping the hand of his beloved wife, Lorine, Tuffy passed into eternity at 8:30 a.m. Friday at the Southeast Texas Medical Center. It was the 81st day of a valiant recovery effort by Tuffy as he shuttled between stays at the Med Center and Mid-Jeff.
The Nelsons moved into their home in Nederland shortly after being married on December 14, 1941. It had been a “love at first sight” courtship when Tuffy first saw Lorine, then a High Island schoolgirl. Tuffy, who would later see World War II Naval duty in the Pacific, took Lorine to the movies on their first date.
The prospect of celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary was a prime motivation for Tuffy to persevere with therapy during his hospitalization.
Tuffy was a staunch supporter of the Nederland Bulldogs, dating from his Booster Club days and Coach Bum Phillips in the early 50s. He stayed in touch by radio and the Port Arthur News in his latter years, and managed to make it to several playoff games.
Family life was dear to Tuffy, becoming more important than ever as the years rolled along and grandkids received Grandpa's rapt attention. Lorine will miss him dearly, as will all in the family, young and old, and many dear, close community friends.
Tuffy was a 71-year member of Pipefitters’ Local 195 and a 67-year Mason and charter member of Nederland Masonic Lodge.
The Nelsons worshipped at First Baptist Church of Nederland where Mr. Nelson’s funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. Jason Burden officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 pm Sunday at Melancon’s Funeral Home. Masonic graveside services will be held at Memorial Gardens.
