Henry Burney Strayhorn, 81, of South Chesterfield, Virginia passed away Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Southside Medical Center in Petersburg, Virginia. Henry was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 23, 1940, to Adele and Robert Strayhorn and was a Nederland resident from 1972 to 2015.
Henry was a member of the Encounter Church in Groves. He retired from Union Pacific Railroad after thirty years of service as a Signal Maintainer. He retired from the Arkansas National Guard after 22 years. He served two years as the coordinator for Southeast Texas Veterans Service Group and a coach for many years for the American Little League Baseball.
Henry is preceded in death by his parents, Robert Henry Strayhorn and Adele Louise Watson Strayhorn, his sister, Betty Bird; and his beloved wife who joined him two days after Henry passed, Shirley Louise Strayhorn.
Those left behind to cherish Henry’s memory are his sons, Larry W. Strayhorn and his wife, Cathryn of South Chesterfield, VA; and Mark A. Strayhorn and his wife, Jodie of Nederland, TX; daughter, Teresa A. Strayhorn Smith and her husband, Chad of Baytown, TX; brother, Robert Strayhorn of St Louis, MO; and sister, Camilla Lorraine Mosley of Nederland, TX; grandchildren, Cory Strayhorn, Blake Strayhorn, Nathan Strayhorn, Derek Strayhorn, Hunter Strayhorn, Evelyn Strayhorn, Matthew Smith and Madison Smith.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Thursday, December 9, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., with a service to begin at 12:00 p.m., at Melancon’s Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Oak Bluff Memorial Park.
