Herman "Jake" Kuehmstedt Jr.

December 15, 1942 — July 31, 2017

Herman Joseph Kuehmstedt, Jr., 74, of Nederland, passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017. He was born December 15, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Herman Kuehmstedt, Sr. and Josephine Costello Kuehmstedt. Herman always had the nickname “Jake” due to a popular saying in the 40’s. Whenever the doctor asked his mom how she was doing while pregnant, she would reply “Everything’s Jake!” Jake was raised by his Grandmom, Bella and his Aunt Peg at their home in Jenkintown, PA. He graduated from high school in 1960 and joined the Army. Jake served his country proudly at many different military bases including Japan, throughout his Army career. He met his wife, Julianna, in 1977 at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. where he was Director of the Cardiac Cath Lab. They were married in 1979. Jake retired from the military in 1981 and moved his family to Kirksville, Missouri where he was Director of Materiel Management for Kirksville Osteopathic Medical Center. In 1996, they moved to Nederland and he worked as Director of Materiel Management at Park Place Hospital, Mid-Jefferson Hospital and at Doctors Hospital. Jake “retired” in 2006. Not one to be idle, he worked part-time at the United Board of Missions in Port Arthur and the Marion and Ed Hughes Public Library in Nederland. He enjoyed cooking shows, collecting power tools, owls, loved reading books, deep frying turkeys, barbecuing and smoking meat for his family and friends.
Jake is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Julianna Kuehmstedt of Nederland; their children, Brianna Kuehmstedt of Austin, Brett Kuehmstedt and Amanda of Nederland and Bridget Kuehmstedt of Nederland; grandchildren, Joseph, Jacob, Adalynn and Alex. He is preceded by his parents; Grandmom, Bella Kuehmstedt and Aunt, Peg Kuehmstedt. He will be greatly missed by family and loved ones.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, August 11, 2017 from 1:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m. at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland. The memorial service will start at 3:00 p.m. also at the funeral home.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, that memorial contributions be made to the United Board of Missions or the Marion and Ed Hughes Library in Nederland.
The family wishes to express their deep appreciation and thanks to the staff of Baptist Regional Cancer Network for the wonderful loving care they gave to Jake and also to all our dear family and friends who helped during this difficult time.
