Homer Harold Brown

1928 ∼ 2020

Homer Harold Brown, 92, of Port Neches, Texas passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020 in Baytown, Texas.

Harold was born September 3, 1928 in Quanah, Texas to Homer and Annie Brown. He grew up in Malakoff, Texas where the Baptist Church and school system provided a basis for his life. He graduated from high school in 1946, and was among the first students of Henderson County Junior college (Trinity Valley Community College). In 1948 he began a four year service with the US Air Force.

In 1952 Harold began a five year tenure of Variety Store management. Marriage to Winnie Harris came in 1957. Shortly, he returned to an educational pursuit resulting in graduation in 1960 from the University of Corpus Christi (Texas A & M at Corpus Christi) with a degree in Business Administration, minor in Religious Education.

1960 also saw the beginning of employment with Jefferson Chemical Co. (Texaco Chemical Co.), where he was employed for 28 years. The first 20 years with company led to the position of Traffic Supervisor. The last eight years were spent as Senior Buyer for Texaco Chemical Co., Port Neches plant.

In 1961 he began to use his Religious Education training at Southside, First Baptist Port Neches, Woodcrest in Port Arthur and eventually in 1993 to Calder, all Baptist congregations.

Other ministry services include: Shepard's Inn (a facility for visitors to area prisoners) and Triangle Aids Network (which primarily transported patients to Galveston and Houston for treatment). Calder church activities included area hurricane repair, Mission trips, and Habitat for Humanity building.

Along the way he managed to work in 22 years on the Planning and Zoning Board for the City of Port Neches.

There is a tapestry of Americana in his life that, although not the same, is woven into the lives of all the parents, grand-parents or great grand-parents for the last 85 or more years.

A visitation for family and friends will begin at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 21, 2020 at Levingston Funeral Home in Port Neches with a graveside service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches with Reverend Jim Fuller officiating.

Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Winnie Brown, a sister and two brothers.

Surviving relatives include his son, Paul Brown and wife Tammie of Baytown, Texas; three grandchildren, Breanne Brown, Jake Carroll and wife Renee, and Lisa Schrock and husband Wade; three great grandchildren, Sloan, Mason, and Jacob.

Memorial contributions may be made to Calder Baptist Church, 1005 N. 11th Street, Beaumont, Texas 77702 or to the American Cancer Society @ Cancer.org.

Condolences

Paul and Family Our deepest sympathy with love to you and your family. Your mom and dad were always so kind and generous to me when I worked with your dad at Texaco Chemical. My visits with them at their home on Goodwin were always very entertaining and interesting. They were such a wonderful Christian loving couple who always thought of others. We were at our sons home on my birthday Sunday and now in quarantine since he and his wife have covid. They are good now and I tested negative yesterday but hate that I will not be in attendance. Your loving heartfelt words on face book are a reflection of you being your father's son. God Bless you.

When I was very young, learning to write, a task assigned to me was to compose a few things in letters and cards the adults sent to each other. I had to include the names of the people the letters were sent to. I also had to write names on gift tags on presents. I couldn't spell Harold. It always came out Harlod. Others pointed this out to me, repeatedly, but he didn't, and he didn't seem to mind. Since Winnie's passing, we've had a very few email exchanges and a few phone calls, but he has sent Christmas cards, birthday cards, some things of Winnie's, and a few books. One of the books was the one he wrote, My Son To Whom It May Concern. I read it then. Since hearing of his passing, I picked it up and reread some chapters at random. It certainly reminds me of his opinions. But, mostly it reminds me of his compassion, caring and engagement in life. These stories, and some I remember being told, but are not in the book, are gifts from him to all of us. So I am going to take literary license again, and change the title of my copy to Harlod's Gifts. Trish, niece on Winnie's side

Harold Brown has been an inspiration for me and for many others. We all looked forward to that special message he sent VIA email and on Facebook. The message was always some inspirational message or some quote from the Bible. Harold you will be missed. You were the one I turned to when I wanted information about the Malakoff High school where you attended and you gave me valuable information that I never knew about. The information you gave me, Harold, was included in a book I was working on. Thanks to you, Harold, I was able to establish the exact location of my Grandmother's 1939 Beauty Shop. You also shared information about the Malakoff Church of Christ, which was located across the street from the Brown residence. You concurred that across the street, Riddlespurgers pond (Tank as East Texans called them) was where Church of Christ baptisms took place. Words cannot not adequately convey the thanks that is due you, nor can they state the emptiness that will be felt and which can not be filled. Your memorial is to be at 2001 Nall Street. I find this to be somewhat ironic because when I went to Lamar Tech ('58-'62), I lived with my Step Father and my Mother and sister at 2428 Nall St. So, you and I have been connected, both in Malakoff and Pt. Neches. Offering prayers to your dear family. So long old friend.

Paul, Tammie, BreAnne and Lisa & Family, You have our heartfelt sympathy. Harold exemplified a servant's heart in all he did. I enjoyed his Facebook posts and marveled at his latch hook skills. He was truly a kind and gentle man. You will continue to be in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Robert and Janine
