Hulet "Hugh" Holcombe

1933 ∼ 2026

Hulet "Hugh" Holcombe, a cherished member of the Port Neches community, passed away peacefully on January 25, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on February 11, 1933, in Langley, Arkansas, Hugh dedicated 63 years to his craft as a barber, providing not only haircuts but also companionship and conversation to countless customers throughout his career.

Hugh was deeply involved in his community, a proud member of Central Baptist Church in Port Neches and the Masonic Lodge, where he formed lasting friendships rooted in shared values and service. He was known for his warm spirit and willingness to help others, which was evident in his passion for visiting his great grandchildren and nurturing his love for gardening. Hugh often delighted in sharing the fruits of his labor, bringing joy to those around him with the produce he cultivated.

Hugh enjoyed the great outdoors, finding peace in gardening, camping, and fishing. Many will fondly remember him for his appreciation of sunny days spent driving down to the river, taking moments to relax in simple solitude. A devoted sports fan, he was particularly enthusiastic about the PNG games and relished listening to the thrill of the games, especially when they played against Nederland.

Hugh is survived by his sons, Ronnie Holcombe and his wife, Linda; and Jeff Holcombe and his wife, Melinda. Hugh's legacy continues through his loving grandson, Justin Holcombe and his wife, Heather; as well as his two great grandchildren, Kenzlee and Emma Holcombe, who brought immense happiness to his life.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Ezma Holcombe; his beloved wife, Alma Holcombe; and three brothers, Veston, Boyd, and Glen Holcombe. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him, both within his family and throughout the wider community.

Visitation for Hugh will be held on Monday, February 2, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Port Neches, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Interment will be held at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches.

Hugh Holcombe’s life was characterized by love, friendship, and an unwavering commitment to community, leaving behind memories that will forever be cherished.

He will greatly missed he gave me my first haircut and continued to be my barber till I was in my twenties. We visited the barber shop every other week and my father had to be first. We would set out front for an hour and a half to be first. I remember he had the worm bar in there and I would play with them. He had the most calming voice I’ve ever encountered. Rip Mr. Holcombe fly high you were one of the greatest men I’ve ever known to date. My condolences go out to the family may you he Lord bless each and every one of you. Prayers sent up.

Hugh was such a special person to me. Although he'd been a family friend for decades, when he and my mom became good friends, he truly became like family. One memory stands out in particular from back when they ate lunch together every day. Hugh called my mom to let her know he was heading over and she told him that I was there, but couldn’t stay because I needed to get back to Longview. He told her to ask me to stay until he arrived. When he showed up, he brought me a PB&J sandwich, a little baggie of chips, and a Coke wrapped in paper towels so I could eat on the road. That was Hugh—always thoughtful, always caring. We talked several times about how many fig trees he had given away that all originated from his own tree. He gave one to me and to both of my daughters, and I’ve since shared “starts” from mine with friends in Longview. I know without a doubt that he loved me, my daughters, and my grandchildren. He never failed to ask about them when we talked. He especially loved sharing his fishing lures with my oldest grandson and even gave him three or four fishing poles. Hugh had such a generous heart. I loved him very much and already miss him deeply. So glad we got to visit with him in December when we were in SETX. Sending love to his family and prayers for comfort in the days ahead.

My condolences to the Holcomb family. Hugh was truly a pillar of the community in Mid-County. Like so many other guys he cut my hair from the time I needed to sit on a booster seat until I grew up. He was one of the first men to shake my hand after hearing from my dad I had recently been raised (if you know, you know). Rest easy Hugh, what a pleasure it was to know you.

Mr. Holcomb crafted many "flat tops" on me back in the sixties at the 8th street shop. The memory that stands out was the time I entered the shop and saw Mike St.Clair getting his hair cut. On seeing Mike I jerked my head up and he did the same. Unfortunately the clippers performed perfectly but Mr. Holcomb's reaction was a little too slow and Mike received a gap on the back of his head. Mr. Holcomb apologized profusely but the damage was done. My condolences to the family.

Thanks Mr. “H” for all the haircuts once I could walk and was out of diapers, for all the stories and corny jokes while setting in your chair, for all the laughter and most of all for you and your wife raising two great boys that I had the pleasure of teaching and coaching. Condolences to all of the family and special heart felt thank you to the family for sharing him with so many in our area for all those years. Rest in peace Mr. “H”..

All of my family loved Mr. Holcomb with all our hearts. He cut my grandfather’s hair, my dad’s hair, my brother’s, my husband’s, and my son’s. I especially loved his dry sense of humor. I saw him a couple of months ago, where he was staying, and when I walked in, he shared the story of when my son got his very first haircut from him. Mr. Holcomb will always be in our hearts, and I know my dad, Glen Sheffield, was there to greet him. You are all in our prayers, and I will cherish his friendship forever.

Mr. Holcombe and his brother both had been my Dad’s barber. I connected with him last year when I delivered MOW several times to him. I asked him if he remembered my Dad and he did and gladly shared some memories with me. It meant so much to me since my Dad had passed last April. He was such a nice man; I am so sorry for your loss, prayers for the family.

I first met Hugh when I worked at park place hospital where he was always visiting his wife who had cancer. Funny that his son Jeff introduced me and mark. He was always a kind person who was always glad to see you. He had a way about him that you knew he cared about you and your family. He was a special part of our family when he and my mother in law became friends. He was always included in our families gatherings. Christmas, thanksgiving and birthdays. He was always proud to make a pecan pie. He will be missed

Use to ride from 1st street when I was 4 until a teenager to get a haircut by Mr. Holcombe. Went from the stool to him having to get on a stool. Best coke machine ever and always gave the greatest candy. Truly the most kindest man there was.
