Ida Mae Davis

Ida Mae Davis our beloved aunt, sister, and friend passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 4, 2020. Ida was born on April 4, 1940 in Port Arthur, Texas to the late Oscar Earl and Maggie Frederick Davis. She was a life-long resident of Groves. Ida was preceded in death by her parents, Oscar Earl Davis and Maggie Frederick Davis; sister, Maryann Davis, and beloved brother James Earl "Jimmy" Davis, Sr. Ida was faithful and completely devoted to God, her family, and friends. She was also full of life and enjoyed showering her family and friends with love and laughter. She was beloved by all who knew her and was entirely devoted to making this world a better place. She fought fiercely for everyone to be respected and loved and instilled these values to her "children". She loved animals and they loved her as well. They always recognized her gentle and kind spirit. She loved spending time with family and friends and enjoyed the holidays where we would all get together to visit and play games. She could always be found at every recital and sporting event for her children and family. Ida was a graduate of Port Neches-Groves High School and attended Lamar University in Port Arthur. In 1962, Ida began working in the Data Processing Department at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont, Texas. From 1970 to 1987 she worked for Texaco Chemical in Port Arthur, Texas as a Supervisor and was very active in their local union helping to make sure all workers were treated fairly and taken care of. In 1987, she returned to the Jefferson County Courthouse to work for County Clerk, Lolita Ramos. She became Supervisor of the Microfilm Department, now the Scanning Department and was instrumental in bringing the department into the 21st century. She received many awards and nominations such as Employee Excellence Awards due to her diligence and hard work. She retired from the courthouse in August of 2001 where she was awarded a Resolution by Jimmie P. Cokinos, Commissioner of Precinct 1 and Waymon D. Hallmark, Commissioner of Precinct 3 of Jefferson County and signed by County Judge Carl R. Griffith and all Precinct Commissioners. Although she retired from the courthouse, she did not retire from life. Always involved in politics and the Democratic party of Southeast Texas, she helped to run the elections until right before her death. Ida was involved in many causes and wanted to help as many people as she could. She had a servants heart in everything she did. She was a devoted member of St. James Catholic Church in Port Arthur where she served on the Altar Society, Minister of Holy Communion, Minister of Lector, Minister of the Eucharist, and choir member to name just a few of the positions she held at her beloved church. She took great joy in being able to bring Holy Communion for parishioners who were ill and to give them comfort. She was also a devoted Aunt and Idee to her nieces, nephews, great niece, and great nephews. She took exceptional care of each one and never missed an opportunity to help. She even learned how to swim later in life to show her kids it is never too late to try something new! She taught them of love, sacrifice, loyalty, hard work, and steadfast courage in everything they do by how she lived her life every day. She left those who knew her an amazing legacy that will live on in the lives of those who loved her. Ida will continue to be loved and cherished by her loving brother, Oscar and wife Faye; her sister-in-law Helen Davis; her children Michele Davis Sheppard; Christy Davis; Jimbo Davis and his wife Amber; Brian Davis; her great nephews Spencer Sheppard, Tyler Sheppard, Jett Davis, and Walker Sheppard; her great-niece Kennedy Davis; her God-daughters Lauren Linn and Amanda Alford-Grogan; and numerous family and friends. We want to especially thank her beloved Dr. Dia Abochamh; Dr. Michael Bergal and The Rehab Unit of The Medical Center of Southeast Texas; The Heritage House and her wonderful and loving nurses, Ms. Mary and LaPrincess; Oak Grove Nursing Home; and Paula Baxter with Compassion Hospice, and Dr. Andy Chen with Texas Oncology. Services will be a held at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas on Wednesday, June 17 with Visitation beginning at 5:00pm - 7:00pm with a recitation of the Rosary at 6:30pm. Funeral Mass will be at St. James Catholic Church on Thursday, June 18 at 10:00am. Honorary Pallbearers are Jimbo Davis, Brian Davis, Spencer Sheppard, Tyler Sheppard, Jett Davis, Walker Sheppard and beloved companion, her dog, Mardi. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations be made in her honor to her beloved St. James Catholic Church, Port Arthur, Texas.
