Imogene Butler

Imogene Butler, 88, of Nederland, Texas completed her Earthly journey early Friday morning, May 17, 2019. She was born in Ben Wheeler, Texas on January 29, 1931 to the late, James Lynon Stringer and Grace Beggs Stringer.
Maw Maw spent her entire life taking care of her family. She adored her boys, Tommy, Mike, and Brent and never missed an opportunity to brag on them. In her eyes they were perfect and could do no wrong -- a sentiment that may or may not have always been shared by her three daughters-in-law, Connie Sanderson Butler, Carolyn Landry Butler, and Stacey Tatum Butler, who she considered her daughters. If possible, she thought even more of her seven grandsons, Jason, Zachary, Brian, Logan, Holden, Jess, and Wade Butler. She spent her weekends attending multiple soccer, baseball, basketball, and football games, and cooking Sunday lunch for the entire family. She made every school/church program, holiday lunch, and grandparents’ day. She offered and helped her ‘daughters’ with teacher gifts, homeroom party goodies, and birthday cakes. She was also the daycare provider for several of her grandsons and great grandchildren when needed. As they grew up and began marrying, Maw Maw just added them to her family. She loved her grandsons’ wives, Kristin, Marci, and Kari and took them on as her own. She was looking forward to adding Rebekah Barbosa to that list in September. Maw Maw was further blessed with great-grandchildren, two boys, Jude and Major Butler, and FINALLY four girls, Blair, Ella, Emma, and Avery Butler. Once again, until she was unable, she attended all games, programs, and now recitals that involved her great grandchildren. She had a bonus grandson in Travis Benton who grew up next door and called her his third grandmother.
She was devoted to her sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Jimmy Garrison, her sister and husband, Lynda and Jackie Stampley and second mother to her niece and nephews, Gena Worsham, Scott Stampley, and Kevin Stampley and their children and grandchildren. “Aunt Ima” was as proud of them as she was her own, making many of their activities as well. She loved her church family and friends at Nederland First United Methodist Church, and we are thankful for all their prayers and friendship. We are most thankful for her very good friends Jack and Barbara Pelloat who have been a blessing to our family for years.
Her life came full circle the last couple of weeks. Her grandchildren became friends spending the night or visiting in Ben Wheeler, Texas with her and Paw Paw almost every weekend while growing up. As her time here on Earth was coming to an end, they took turns spending the night and visiting with her so she wouldn’t be alone. We know that this life is ever changed, but we will certainly miss her so very much. I only hope we can all continue to make her proud. We love you always, Maw Maw.
Those left to cherish Imogene’s memory are her sons, Tommy L. Butler and his wife, Connie of Nederland, Michael S. Butler and his wife, Carolyn of Nederland, and Brent Butler and his wife, Stacey of Nederland; her sister, Lynda Stampley and her husband, Jackie of Nederland; her grandsons, Jason Butler and his wife, Kristin of Nederland, Zachary Butler and his wife, Marci of Orangefield, Holden Butler of Nederland, Brian Butler and his wife, Kari of Nederland, Logan Butler of Nederland, Jess Butler of Nederland, and Wade Butler of Nederland; her great-grandchildren, Jude Butler, Ella Butler, Blair Butler, Major Butler, Emma Butler, and Avery Butler; also a host of loving nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 61 years, Thomas E. Butler.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at First United Methodist Church in Nederland, Rev. Jonathan Bynum, officiant. An additional funeral service will be held at Eubanks Funeral Home in Canton, Texas on Friday, May 24, 2019 at 1:00pm with Rev. Wayne Flowers, officiant. Interment will follow at Haven of Memories Cemetery in Canton, Texas.
