Irene Cupertina Díaz, una mujer extraordinaria cuya vida encarnó resiliencia, dedicación y un espíritu que inspiró a quienes la rodeaban, falleció pacíficamente el 3 de febrero de 2025 en Port Arthur, Texas. Nacida el 18 de septiembre de 1937 en Niquero, Provincia de Gramma, Cuba, era la menor de seis hermanos y pasó sus primeros años en un entorno rural que moldeó sus valores y carácter.

El viaje de Irene en la vida estuvo marcado por logros significativos y profundos compromisos con su familia y su fe. Tras la muerte del padre de sus hijos, se mudó valientemente a la ciudad capital de La Habana, donde se embarcó en un nuevo capítulo lleno de determinación. Irene consiguió un puesto como telefonista en un Centro Científico, donde trabajó diligentemente durante muchos años hasta su jubilación en 2008. Su sed de conocimiento fue evidente mientras se educaba a través de un programa de estudio individual y diversas publicaciones, dominando las letras sin instrucción formal.

Más allá de sus labores profesionales, Irene era una mujer a la moda que se enorgullecía mucho de su apariencia, siempre vestía bien y cuidaba meticulosamente su cabello y maquillaje. Su personalidad se definió por la decencia y la seriedad, cualidades que inculcó a sus hijos. Aseguró que sus hijos, Moisés Atencio y José G. Atencio Díaz, se guiaran por los principios de respeto, puntualidad y buenos valores.

En su vida personal, Irene encontró alegría en jugar a las cartas españolas y abrazó el deleite de la música y el baile. Amante de diversos géneros musicales, entre ellos salsa, merengue, bachata, boleros e incluso reggaetón, trajo ritmo y armonía a la vida de su familia.

Irene se convirtió en una matriarca para sus seres queridos, ganándose su admiración no solo por sus vínculos familiares sino también por su compromiso con la predicación religiosa como testigo de Jehová. Se ganó un inmenso respeto dentro de su comunidad religiosa, donde su sabiduría, edad y dedicación brillaron intensamente.

Su hazaña más valiente se produjo en 2019, cuando emprendió un extraordinario viaje desde Nicaragua a Estados Unidos, demostrando extraordinaria fortaleza y resiliencia. Viajó por tierra a través de varios países, superando desafíos que habrían disuadido a muchos y finalmente llegó a su destino sin pasar más de 24 horas en la frontera.

A Irene le sobreviven sus queridos hijos, Moisés Atencio y José G. Atencio Díaz, así como sus queridos nietos, Noelia Irene Atencio y José Adrián Atencio. El legado de amor continúa con sus bisnietos: Marcos Adriano Atencio, Tanya Atencio, Roi Adrian Atencio, Nicole Atencio, Melody y Haley Reinier Perez Atencio, Camila Mesa Atencio y Antonela Mesa Atencio.

Born on September 18, 1937, in Niquero, Gramma Province, Cuba, she was the youngest of six siblings and spent her early years in a rural setting that shaped her values and character.

Following the death of her children's father, she courageously moved to the capital city of Havana, where she embarked on a new chapter filled with determination. Irene secured a position as a telephone operator at a Scientific Center, where she worked diligently for many years until her retirement in 2008. Her thirst for knowledge was evident as she educated herself through an individual study program and various publications, mastering her letters without formal instruction.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Irene was a fashionable woman who took great pride in her appearance, always dressing well and meticulously caring for her hair and makeup. Her personality was defined by decency and seriousness, qualities that she instilled in her children. She ensured that her sons, Moisés Atencio and Jose G. Atencio Diaz, were guided by the principles of respect, punctuality, and good values.

In her personal life, Irene found joy in playing Spanish cards and embraced the delight of music and dancing. A lover of diverse musical genres, including salsa, merengue, bachata, boleros, and even reggaeton, she brought rhythm and harmony into the lives of her family.

Irene became a matriarch to her loved ones, earning their admiration not only through familial bonds but also through her commitment to religious preaching as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She garnered immense respect within her religious community, where her wisdom, age, and dedication shone brightly.

Her most courageous feat came in 2019 when she undertook a remarkable journey from Nicaragua to the United States, demonstrating extraordinary fortitude and resilience. She traveled over land through various countries, overcoming challenges that would have deterred many, and ultimately reached her destination without spending more than 24 hours at the border.

Irene is survived by her beloved sons, Moisés Atencio and Jose G. Atencio Diaz, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Noelia Irene Atencio and José Adrian Atencio. The legacy of love continues with her great-grandchildren: Marcos Adriano Atencio, Tanya Atencio, Roi Adrian Atencio, Nicole Atencio, Melody and Haley Reinier Perez Atencio, Camila Mesa Atencio, and Antonela Mesa Atencio.

She is preceded in death by her parents, the father of her children, Jose Lorenzo Atencio, siblings, Eficia, Faustino, Salvador, Marcelina, and Nena.

A visitation service to celebrate her life will be held on February 5, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, located at 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, TX 77627.
