J. C. Drake, of Port Arthur, Texas, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at home surrounded by family. He was 86.
Born in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, on August 17, 1937, to the late James Clarence Drake and Myrtle Patterson Benoist. After graduating from University High School in Los Angeles, California he served in the navy as an airship rigger and met his bride of 56 years, the late Alma Katherine Hendrix whom he wed in 1959. He settled in Port Arthur and worked 30 years until retirement from the Boilermakers Local #587.
As the father of five, he could often be found at scout meetings, sports games, band concerts, and dance recitals. He always had time for his family.
In retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, fishing and spending time with his grandkids. He was an avid gardener and a member of the Jefferson County Master Gardeners and Texas Master Naturalists. He was a member of The Methodist Temple where he served as a trustee.
J. C. is preceded in death by his wife, Alma Katherine Drake; son, Jay Charles Drake; grandson, Jayce Louis Drake and sisters, Faye McGray and Dartis McMackin.
J. C. is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Cavazos of Baytown, children: Steve Drake and wife, Sue of Port Acres; Beth Craigen and husband, Kyle of Fannett; Kelly Kebodeaux and husband, Kirk of Cypress; and Andrew Drake of Port Arthur; grandchildren; Pamela Hughes, Taylor Craigen, William Craigen, Katelyn Kebodeaux, Karlene Rios and Karyssa Kebodeaux; great grandchildren: Hannah, Joseph, Rachel, Jacob Hughes and Parker Craigen, a beloved canine Sassy, and a host of other loving family members and friends.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 30, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at The Methodist Temple church in Port Arthur, Texas. Officiating will be Rev. Phil Chamberlin.
