James Lee Byers

1937 ∼ 2026

James Lee Byers went home to be with the Lord on April 4, 2026, in The Woodlands, Texas. Born on December 16, 1937, in Hubbard, Texas, he lived a life defined by devotion to his family, service to his country with love and quiet kindness to all those around him.

Mr. Byers was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force, having devoted part of his life to serving his country with honor and integrity. After his military service, he faithfully served the community of Nederland, Texas, as a city building official for 39 years.

James’s greatest joy was spending quality time with his family and many friends. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors, whether it be travelling, working on cars, tending to his yard, or simply sitting on the porch with a hot cup of coffee. Skilled in many areas, James was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. James’s personality was undeniably family-centered. Among his proudest accomplishments was raising his two sons, Mark and Troy, who grew into compassionate and responsible men, and nurturing his grandchildren always offering words of encouragement and wisdom. His legacy is reflected in the deep bonds and values he instilled—kindness, dedication, and unwavering support for his family—qualities that continue to shape the lives of his loved ones.

He is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. The bonds he nurtured throughout his life remain strong and enduring.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary Vernelle Byers; his parents, James and Ethel Lee Byers; his son, Mark Byers; granddaughters Shauna Craymer and Brandi Byers; his sister, Ethel Byers; and his brother, John Byers. Their memories live on in the hearts of all who knew James.

Surviving him is his devoted son, Troy Byers, along with his wife Susie of Spring. He is also survived by grandchildren Ashley Byers and Alexis Byers, who carry forward his kind spirit. Great-grandchildren Ryker, Remi, Brittany, and Robbie continue to celebrate his legacy. James is also remembered fondly by his brothers, William Byers, Jimmy Byers, and Paul Gallier, as well as his sisters Mandy Byers and Rose Powell and other members of the Byers family.

Services to honor and remember James Lee Byers will be held at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home - Port Neches, located at 2001 Nall Street, Port Neches, Texas 77651. Visitation will take place on April 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed by a funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. A graveside service will be held at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches, Texas. The community is invited to join in celebrating the life of a man who gave so much and touched many lives with his unwavering kindness and dedication.

James Lee Byers’s life stands as a testament to the enduring strength and love of family and the quiet power of a man committed to his values. Though he is no longer with us, his memory will forever be held dear by those who loved him.
