Dr. James "Lanny" Howell

1953 ∼ 2017

James “Lanny” Howell, 63, of Nederland, went home to be with the Lord Monday, October 16th, 2017 while doing one of the things he loved best, hunting in Colorado. He was born on November 10, 1953 in Port Arthur to the late Ed Howell and Dorothy Savoy Howell.

Dr. Lanny Howell was a lifelong resident of Nederland and graduated from Nederland High School in 1972. He practiced dentistry in his hometown for thirty-seven years. He loved serving at his church, Hillcrest Baptist, and traveled to share Christ all over the world through missions. He loved being outdoors, whether water skiing, hunting, landscaping or working his dogs. He was known by family and friends for his warm smile and could often be heard giving his favorite greeting, “Hey Bub!”

Dr. Howell is survived by his sons, Lance Howell and wife, Alison of Nederland and Micah Howell and wife, Laurie of Nederland; daughter, Jenna Deupree and husband, Jared, of Cleveland; fiancé, Pam Breaux of Lumberton; grandchildren, Mackenzie Howell, Andrew Howell, Brenlee Kate Howell and Callee Rae Howell; sister, Lynda Stockton and husband, Don of Wildwood. He is preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Glaze Howell and parents.

A celebration of Lanny’s life will be held at 2pm Saturday, October 21st at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 3324 Park Drive in Nederland, under the direction of Melancon Funeral Home in Nederland. A gathering of family and friends will take place before the service from 11am to 2pm, also at Hillcrest Baptist.

Serving as pallbearers are Danny Delahoussaye, Chris Kennaugh, Treyson Stockton, Trent Stockton, Gene Marsh and Robert Bowling. Serving as honorary pallbearers are Bobby Copley and James Grey.

The family has requested in lieu of flowers that the memorial contributions be made to Hillcrest Baptist Church in Nederland.

For we know that if our temporary, earthly dwelling is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal dwelling in the heavens, not made with hands. 2 Corinthians 5:1

He is with Jesus now.

Dear family and friends of Lanny, I was so saddened by the news of Lanny's passing. My thoughts and heart are with you. Lanny comes alive in the stories shared here! I can see, hear, hug, and laugh with him through your memories. A strong memory of mine is hearing my folks, Gwen and Denver, update happenings from Timberlane. Their stories always included yet another endearing visit from Lanny and Brenda's kids. Mother and Dad loved their sweet attentiveness, their pies and soups delivered to the door, and the interesting directions of their lives. I'm so very sorry for your heartache. I know the spirits of those who love you deeply will be with you always.

What wonderful memories of a great friend and classmate. Lanny and I attended Mrs. Hollis's Kindergarten car pooling with the Sheffields and the Walters in our little town of Nederland. From Kindergarten through High school, we remained good friends. I will never forget the great time we had decorating the homecoming float at the Howell's house. Lanny was always friendly, very popular, and excelled scholastically. Those years were golden for us all and Lanny was an integral part in making it so. Rest in peace Lanny.

I met Lanny in sixth grade of Junior High School; We followed each other through High School. He was one of the most genuine people I have ever met. I just met up with him again in August 2017 at our 45th reunion. He was still the same person I first met. I was shocked and very saddened by the news. I am very sorry for the family. He was a good and decent man, a good friend and classmate.

I will forever cherish the time we had in Haiti giving medical treatment to village people; helping Harvey flood victims that needed a place to sleep, eat, and a listening ear; and the many inactions while Serving and not being Served with our walk with Jesus. Thank you Lanny for being an example of how a Christian witnesses using compassion, love, and understanding

Our families were up at their camp on Toledo Bend Lake frequently. This one time I'm riding in the boat with Lanny and a friend of his. Lanny was driving the boat I had my back to Lanny, watching Brenda skiing. Lanny's friend was a champion skier and had asked if I wanted to learn how to ski. I had told him no because I didn't like Dark Water. They really tried to talk me into learning how to ski but it was a no-go. Next thing I know Brenda's hollering at Lanny and Lanny's laughing so I don't know if he turned the boat a bit too much for her or what but she fell. Turning the boat around to get her I believe he said something to the effect o'lord I'm in trouble now. Then watching Lanny ski was something else. He did these things like "rooster tails" water reaching way up there.

I was fortunate to share so many great outdoor experiences with Lanny years ago in Scouting and Explorers. He was so much fun to be around, so easygoing, and someone you could count on when the going got tough. Everyone wanted to be around him. He's gone too soon!

So many but one memory that has come to mind in recent days is once Lanny, Brenda and I escaped for a last minute ski weekend decades ago and Brenda or I had fallen while skiing. The two of us were laughing & giggling and having a good old time when we realized Lanny was mad at us because the National Anthem was playing in the distance and we weren't standing at attention with our hands over our heart! We honestly hadn't even heard it but Lanny was a patriot Eagle Scout through and through! He will be missed by all who knew him. To know him was to love him!

Our thoughts and prayers are with Lanny's family. He was a true christian, a wonderful family man, and a dear friend. When my mother would go to Lanny's office he would call her Bub also. Thanks for being my friend, Lanny. Jeff & Barb Metreyeon

Lanny was an Eagle Scout when I was young, and I always looked up to him. When I was an adult, he was my family dentist. He always had a great attitude, a smile, and something positive to discuss.

What a terrible loss for family, friends and our community...Lanny was a friend from high school to both Terry and I...he was Terry's trainer in football...he was our family dentist...he was a friend of many years and just a genuinely kind and generous fella. Be filled with the Lord's blessings and His grace.....Terry and Shari' Harris
