James "Jimbo" Aaron Sutherlin

1952 ∼ 2018

JAMES (JIMBO) AARON SUTHERLIN I was born September 26, 1952 in Port Arthur, TX to James Edgar and Jewell Yvonne Aaron Sutherlin. Except for my time at Texas A&M University in College Station, I have spent my entire life in and around Port Arthur. My mother retired from the City of Port Arthur after serving for thirty-one years while my father was a letter carrier in Port Arthur for nearly 20 years prior to his retirement. With my enduring passion for coastal fishing and hunting, there is no place I would rather call home. As the Upper Gulf Coast Wetland Ecosystem Project Leader with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, I was based at the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area near Taylor Bayou for twenty-five years before retiring in 2015. My career at Parks and Wildlife complemented my interests in both wintering migratory and resident non-migratory waterfowl, especially mottled ducks (Anas fulvigula), and allowed me to carry out my love for the outdoors in ways that I hope will benefit generations of hunters and anglers to come. I have enjoyed the many pleasures of my friends; sister Elizabeth Anne Coakley (Ron); brother David (Annie); my two sons, Aaron (Molly) and Kendall; and most of all the love of my life, my soul mate, my wife, Lynne Lange. I was blessed with two remarkable grandchildren, Harper and Levi. Initially diagnosed in June of 2010, I have been battling a rare blood cancer known as multiple myeloma. My family and I have put up the good fight and are forever appreciative to the teams at MD Anderson who have provided exceptional support. Arrangements have been made at Levingston Funeral Home, Groves, TX, for visitation on Sunday, November 18 from 3 - 5 PM, and memorial service on Monday, November 19 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Ducks Unlimited or St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital.

There are no words that can fill the void in your life. Today is a home going celebration of his life. Jimbo was our neighbor and he opened our eyes in appreciation of nature in seeing birds, owls,plAnts, trees, and even our pets. We came to get three dogs at different stages in our life and the dogs live in the house with us. Jimbo had an adventurous spirit and reminded me of Grizzly Adams. Even though he is not here physically he lives in your hearts and with us daily when we view nature.

Jim made a lasting impression on many adults and youngsters in our area. I did not grow up duck hunting and just happened to meet Jim at a pre-season meeting at "JD". He and his staff were always willing to help us get started and assist us in hunting public land. With that help I was able to introduce my son and a number of other young folks (now young adults) to public waterfowl hunting. Jim's "love for the outdoors" lives on! We spent many a morning with Jim and Kendal hunting "JD". We did not always limit but always had an adventure - usually very wet and muddy. We spent a lot of post hunt time and Mardi Gras' boat parades with "Miss Lynne"! Jim was a big supporter of Scouting and provided my son with an opportunity to complete an Eagle Project benefitting JDMWMA and it's users. That marsh restoration project was a great work and learning experience for a number of Scouts and other volunteers, and was critical to his earning that ultimate BSA rank. We will always be grateful for his support. Please accept our condolences for your family. We are thankful for his life and legacy!

To Lynn and the members of Jim's family, although I didn't know Jim long I am grateful that I got to spend time with him. A champion fighter for nature and against the big C. God's blessings on all of you.

To Jim's family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Jim had a wonderful life from what I read in his obituary. I only met him one time, when Aaron and Molly were married, but he was such a friendly, warm man and loved his family very much. You are all in my prayers for comfort and peace at this sad time. sincerely Pattie Black. ( Molly's Grandma in MN)
