James “Ryan” McComic, a beloved son, brother, uncle, and great-uncle, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2026, in Houston, Texas. He was 53.
Born February 2, 1973, in Port Arthur, Texas, Ryan spent most of his life in Nederland, where he made lifelong friends and built a life full of family. He graduated from Nederland High School in 1992 and proudly played football, creating memories and friendships that stayed with him always. One of his most cherished moments was being baptized at Fords Creek Baptist Church alongside his two nieces—a memory that spoke to the close bond they shared. At the time of his passing, Ryan lived in Katy, Texas.
Ryan was a big kid at heart, quick with a playful grin and an easy, friendly way about him. He had a tough shell, but those who knew him best always saw the heart of gold underneath. Even in difficult times, he quickly won over his doctors and nurses with that same spirit. He loved the thrill of motocross, fishing any lake, pond, or ocean he could find, and spending quiet hours in the deer stand. When he was no longer able to hunt, he turned to a new passion—hunting for sneakers. Come football season, you could always find him cheering loudly for his beloved Texas Longhorns.
Ryan is survived by his parents, James and Margaret McComic of Poplarville, Mississippi; his sister, Jill McComic Waid of Katy; his nieces, Delaney Nicole Waid and Natalie Ireland Waid of Katy; and his great-nephew, Denver Kayson Brown of Katy. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. McComic and Mr. and Mrs. Henry DeVries, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms. He also leaves behind a close circle of friends who will serve as his honorary pallbearers: Eddie Meeker, Jarrod Rebert, Curtis White, Cory Yonker, and Tommy Glidewell.
A visitation will be held Sunday, October 25, 2026, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas 77627. The funeral service will follow immediately at 3:30 p.m. at the same location. A graveside service will take place Tuesday, October 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Fords Creek Cemetery in Poplarville, Mississippi.
Ryan will be deeply missed by all who were lucky enough to know him.
