James Edward McDaniel, Jr., known affectionately as Jim, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2024, in Nederland, Texas. Born on November 23, 1940, in Port Arthur, Texas, Jim was a dedicated family man and a prominent figure in the community, leaving a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
For 40 years, Jim devoted his professional life to banking at Nederland State Bank and Allied Bank. He was deeply respected in his field and was known for his integrity and commitment to the well-being of his clients. His loyal service to the community extended beyond his career; he was an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, where he twice served as President, and he made notable contributions to the real estate community as a member of the Mid-County Board of Realtors. His exemplary service was recognized when he received the Realtor of the Year award on two occasions. Additionally, Jim served on the Jefferson Appraisal District Board and was a dedicated member of First Methodist Nederland, where his faith guided him throughout his life.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jim had a passion for family and enjoyment of life. He cherished every moment spent with his wife, Joyce McDaniel, with whom he shared 63 wonderful years of marriage. Jim was the proud father of three daughters: Sharon McKenzie and Chris Orzabal of Houston, Shannon Brown and her husband George Brown of Lindale, and Sharla Cormier and her husband Keith Cormier of Bridge City. His love extended to his grandchildren—Craig Cormier of Nederland, Erin Fenton and her husband Will of Houston, Meredith First and her husband Jeremy of Houston, James McKenzie and his wife Hallie of Houston, Kellyn Robertson and her husband Randall of Vidor, Noah Cormier of Bridge City, Trevor Brown and Lindsey Rogers of Caldwell, Travis Brown of Ruidoso, New Mexico, and Theron Brown and Victoria Hughey of Dallas and great-grandchildren Emery Fenton and Jonah First.
Jim often expressed joy in simple pleasures, such as cooking and fishing, activities he loved sharing with his daughters, ensuring they all learned the art of angling. His affinity for the Texas Hill Country was known among family, and memories of those trips will forever hold a special place in their hearts. He also found comfort and camaraderie in the fellowship of his men's prayer breakfast and the "Lunch Bunch" gatherings at Jason's Deli, where friendships flourished over good food and laughter.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, along with his sister, Carol Landry of Beaumont. He was preceded in death by his parents, James E. and Hazel McDaniel, Sr., and his brother, John Norman McDaniel.
A visitation to honor Jim’s life will be held on September 6, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service at 1:00 PM at 1605 Avenue H, Nederland, Texas. His spirit, kindness, and contributions to the lives of those around him will forever be cherished and remembered.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church of Nederland, P.O. Box 905, Nederland, Texas 77627, or Hospice of Southeast Texas, P.O. Box 2385, Orange, Texas 77631.
