James Allen Waddill, 78, of Elkins, Arkansas, passed away on March 12, 2025, in Port Arthur, Texas, the city of his birth. Born on November 5, 1946, James lived a life marked by service, dedication, and a passion for learning and creation.
A proud graduate of Port Neches Groves High School in 1965, James continued his education at the University of Arkansas, where he earned a master's degree in industrial education. His commitment to education led him to teach at Northwest Arkansas Vocational Technical School for several years. Additionally, he shared his knowledge and expertise as an adjunct professor at Lamar University in Beaumont, specializing in concrete and steel construction engineering.
James served honorably in the United States Army as a Field Artillery Officer and earned the rank of Captain. His bravery and dedication during the Vietnam War earned him both a Silver Star and a Bronze Star, reflecting his unwavering commitment to serving his country. After retiring from military service, he channeled his skills into the construction industry, where he was instrumental in building homes along the Gulf Coast of Texas in the aftermath of several hurricanes.
James was well-known for his generous spirit and willingness to help others. He had a knack for connecting with people and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His artistic talents shone through skilled woodworking, glass etching, stained glass, and building deer feeders and deer blinds, which he actively pursued until just a month before his passing.
An avid outdoorsman, James enjoyed hunting, fishing, SCUBA diving, and spear fishing, activities that allowed him to immerse himself in nature and share joyful moments with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, June Blanchard Waddill; his daughter, April Waddill Hudson, and her husband, Hayes; and his grandsons, Luke and Levi Hudson. James also leaves behind his sister, Donna Waddill Goodwin.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Gilbert Waddill and Norma Louise (Hansel) Waddill; his sister, Norma Ann Waddill; and his brother, H. George Waddill.
Cremation services are under the direction of Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. James will be interned in a private family cemetery in Arkansas at a later date.
