Jean Jeanette (Gabourel) Cannon

May 2, 1935 — March 15, 2023

Jean Jeanette (Gabourel) Cannon, 87, of Nederland took Jesus’ hand peacefully at her home of 65 years with her family by her side, on March 15, 2023. She was born in Port Arthur on May 2, 1935 to the late John C. Gabourel and LaUna Mae (Pierce) Gabourel. Jean was a faithful member of Wesley Methodist Church in Nederland.
Jean grew up in Port Arthur, Texas with her parents and three siblings. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School at the age of 18. She then attended Port Arthur College to obtain a one-year degree in Stenography. She landed a job at First National Bank of Port Arthur as the President’s Secretary where she worked for many years. She then worked for many years at MBANK, a block from her home while also caring for her mother who was ill. She retired from Manske-Sheffield as a medical transcriptionist.
Jean was active in the Women’s Group at Wesley, volunteered at the United Board of Missions and a member of DAR.
Jean loved her family! Her love language was to cook for any and all. No one left her home hungry nor without a handful of goods. Some of the favorites included her unmatched delicious fried chicken, rice and gravy, pound cake, chocolate pie and no-bake oatmeal cookies.
Hobbies include: Being with family, loving and tending to her beloved dog, Millie, attending grandchildren/great-grandchildren events, cooking, shopping, getting nails done, being pampered weekly by Clyde and staff at Clydes Hairloom. To know her was to love her! She led by example and was a trued woman of God. The sweetest and most generous soul, now set free. She is loved beyond words and will be missed greatly beyond measure. “We love our Mom and MawMaw, a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck!”, which she sang to all in her precious voice.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar L. Cannon, Jr., and their beloved grandson, Jeremy Randall Bradley. Her brothers, Hubert C. Gabourel and James R. Gabourel and one sister, Doris E. Holmes.
Those left to treasure Jean’s memory are her daughters, Valetra Cannon Bradley and her husband, Randy Bradley of League City and Regina Cannon Rutherford and her husband, Steve Rutherford of Winnie. One son, John Lee Cannon of Nederland; grandchildren, Jennifer Sandel and her husband, Jeff of Seabrook, Texas, Katelyn Webb and her husband, Rob of Tennessee, Emily Davis and her husband, Matt of Angleton, Texas, Josh Rutherford and his wife, Alicia of Beaumont, Texas, Kara Permenter and her husband, Aaron of Hamshire, Texas, Stevi Rutherford of Winnie, Texas, Brenden Cannon of Austin, Texas, Brooke Cannon of Round Rock, Texas, and Chloe Cannon of Port Neches, Texas; great-grandchildren, Braden Felcman, Carter Felcman, Hudson Felcman, Londyn Webb, Autumn Webb, Kennedi Davis, Reece Davis, Cannon Rutherford, Malachi Rutherford, McCoy Permenter, Hattie Permenter and Royce Permenter; bonus great-grandchildren, Christina Henry of League City, Texas, Ashlyn Sandel of Seabrook, Texas and Rhyan Sandel of Seabrook, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
