Jill Anne Avery

1952 ∼ 2013

Jill Anne Avery

Jill Anne Avery, 61, of Groves, TX went to be with her Lord and Savior on October 8, 2013, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.

Jill was born in New York City on September 11, 1952 and attended school there until her father was transferred to Texas in 1960, where she attended St. Catherine’s Catholic School and graduated from Bishop Byrne High School in 1970. While attending Bishop Byrne, she was a member of the Bishop Byrne Colleens and was named “Colleen of the Year”.

After graduation, she started her college years at Lamar University, majoring in Special Education. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and became a “Little Sister” to the ATO Fraternity. She graduated from Lamar in 1974 with a B.A. in Special Education and earned her Masters of Education in 1990.

She taught for 27 years in the PNISD and 11 years in NISD as Head of Special Education at Hillcrest and Helena Park Schools in Nederland, where she was also Assistant Principal. Among Jill’s many organizations, she was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa National Teaching Sorority, Lifetime member of the PTA, was named “teacher of the Year” in 2011-12, and was also a member of the Port Arthur Service League. She was a member of the St. Peter’s A.C.T.S. Community Team and also taught CCD at both St. Catherine’s and St. Peter’s Catholic Churches, where she was also a Eucharistic Minister. Jill was also a huge lover of animals and was a big supporter of the Humane Society. She had a lifelong love of gardening, and she shared many cuttings and bulbs with friends and family.

Jill is preceded in death by her father, John T. McCarthy. She is survived by her husband, Bill of 37 years; her mother, Lucille McCarthy; mother-in-law, Virginia Avery; sisters, Jean Philpot and her husband, Dean of Kingwood, Nancy Whitsitt of Port Arthur; and Janet DeTorre and husband, Victor of Houston; and brothers, Richard McCarthy of Kountze and John McCarthy of Austin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Groves with Msgr. Kenneth Greig celebrant. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland on Wednesday, October 9, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

I was so very blessed to have Jill as a dear friend for over 40 years. Even though I moved over a thousand miles away we always managed to keep in touch and when I made trips home we always picked up right where we left off as no time had passed. She indeed showed a kindness and unconditional love for all including her precious animals. I am so thankful we had a wonderful visit in August 2013. I will cherish my memories of our special bond. Bill, I am praying for you, Jill's family and all her loved ones to find strength and comfort from the Lord. Jill's faith and courage are an inspiration to me. She will forever be in my heart. I too remember Jill in high school. We both played the tenor drum in the Colleens. I was sad to hear of her illness and now her passing. So sorry that we did not keep in touch through the years. I loved her smile and sense of humor. May the Lord comfort her loved ones during this time. Mary Rosetta Hutchinson

What is left to say about Jill? All the accolades that we could give wouldn't even begin to tell enough about her genuine, Christian spirit. She truly tried to live as Christ commanded us, and it appeared to be effortless for her. The radiance of her smile and compassionate spirit will be missed, leaving a void that can only be filled with the memories that all who loved her carry with them. I first knew her as a student at Bishop Byrne HIgh School when my husband coached there many years ago. (She showed love and compassion , when he passed on seven years ago.) Later on , we became friends as fellow teachers in PNGISD. She went on to become my supervisor at one point, and was an outstanding encourager. She made everyone feel that they were very special. I send my condolences to her husband, Bill and all of her family members. I love you, Jill...I will miss you and think of you often. My heart is sad for myself, but rejoices for you that your battle has been won and you are now fully healed. Carol Hebert

Mrs. Avery was a great teacher. I had her at Groves Elementary for 2 years. She will be greatly missed. My mom would see her over the years and she was always so excited to hear how I was doing. She is the one who helped make me the person I am today without her teaching and patience I never would have been able to be doing the work I do today! I will miss her dearly. Charlene Carter

Jill was the first friend I made when our families moved to Texas in the 60's. Our fathers worked together and our families became good friends. We went through grade school and high school together. She was truly a beautiful person and one I will never forget for her kindness and friendship. Chris Reynolds

Jill was a sweet, caring person and the world has definitely lost a precious soul. Heaven is rejoicing though because they have gained an angel. Jill always had a smile on her face and room in her heart for another student or friend. She was a giving, loving person who showed God's love where ever she went. I cherish her memory and pray for Bill and her family. I am sure God told Jill, "come in my child and rest. You were a good and faithful servant". She truly was a blessing on earth and leaves many friends and loved ones behind. Her life was one of value and direction and her light will be missed!!

To all our "Texas" McCarthy cousins. We are heavy hearted up here in NJ. Jill was such a special and loving person. We remember hanging w ya'll during your summer trips back up north as children and really appreciated your visits as we all grew up. Jill (and Bill's) visits were always filled w laughs and great stories. You were blessed to have such a wonderful sister. The NJ McCarthys

Our hearts are broken by the loss of our beloved cousin Jill, who was truly as beautiful inside as she was outside. Did anyone ever see her without a smile on her face? Though the miles prevented us from being with her and the other "Texas kids" as often as we would have liked, we cherished the times we did have together -- thanks largely to Jill's amazing ability to pick up exactly where we'd all left off, talking and laughing together as if we'd never been apart. We are all so blessed for having had her in our family and in our lives, and we send our deepest sympathy and tightest hugs to Bill, Aunt Mickey, Jean, Richard, Nancy, Janet, John, and their families. We are with you in spirit! With lots of love, The "NJ McCarthys" -- Aunt Kay and Michelle, Mary, Vince, Paul, Kathie, David, and all of our families
