Joan Phillips

1933 ∼ 2025

Clara Joan Phillips, a cherished member of her family and community, passed from this life into eternal rest on January 23, 2025, at the age of 91 in Port Arthur, Texas. Born on August 22, 1933, in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, she lived a life dedicated to service, love, and unwavering strength.

Joan embarked on her career as a Registered Nurse, a profession that she embraced with devotion for an impressive 45 years at St. Mary's Hospital. Her compassionate nature and commitment to healing were evident both professionally and personally. Additionally, she volunteered for many years at the Attic Mission, offering support and hope to those in need, demonstrating her remarkable spirit of generosity and kindness.  Joan had a strong Christian faith, she read her bible every day, and loved to share with everyone.  Her mission was to make sure everyone was exposed to the love of Christ.

Joan was a loving grandmother, whose legacy will be carried on by her eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. It was apparent to all who knew her that family was at the heart of her life. Their love and pride reflected in her eyes, she dedicated herself to nurturing those around her.

In her educational pursuits, Joan graduated from St. Mary's Nursing School in 1954, setting the foundation for a lifelong journey in healthcare. Joan and her husband were avid fishermen and shared their love for fishing with their children and grandchildren. Her influence, particularly on her grandson who later became a Marine Biologist, stands as a testament to her guiding spirit and commitment to fostering growth and ambition in those she loved.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Joan treasured her hobbies, which included cooking and bowling. These pastimes brought her joy and provided cherished moments with family and friends.

Joan is survived by her beloved daughters, Gloria Bradley of Mustang, Oklahoma,  Elaine Stark and her husband Ken Flowers of Austin; and her son, Steven Phillips and his wife Delores Bush of Port Arthur. She also leaves behind her brother, Allen Savoy, and sister, Charlene Savoy, who will carry the memories of her spirited presence with them always.

She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 59 years, Gene A. Phillips, as well as her parents, Charles and Frances Eva Savoy, and five siblings, all of whom remain fondly remembered.

The visitation for Joan Phillips will take place on January 27, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, at Groves, Melancon Levingston Funeral Home, 5601 39th St, Groves, TX 77619. A funeral service will follow on January 28, 2025, at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home commencing at 10:00 AM with a graveside service at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Joan Phillips will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched. Her spirit and legacy of love will continue to inspire her family and community for generations to come.
