Dear Levingston Family, I was so sorry to hear of Joel's passing. Joel was the ultimate gentleman and such a great man to have had the pleasure of knowing! I immediately thought back to our incredible trips to Wharton and to Hamshire. In spite of having work to do, Joel always made sure that we had a great time. He will truly be missed! I will always remember Joel standing in the doorways of either the funeral home or church with a smile and hug. He was dedicated to his church and family not to mention all of the families that went to him in their time of grief. He will be greatly missed by my family and by all. Go rest high on that mountain Joel.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of my friend of many years. I worked with Joel when he was Director of Emergency Management for the City of Groves and I worked for Jefferson County. He worked very hard to protect his city and county during emergencies! Besides that he had many other hats/titles and responsibilities which he did without complaining and a smile on his face. Yes, anyone who knew him knew that he contributed so much to his church, city, county, state and country! Thank you for your service Joel. You will be missed by many! My condolences to Portia, Cathy, Jay and their families. Praying for you during this sad time.

No doubt I am a better man having known and served our community together with him. Particularly, service to our Veterans. Joel walked the walk and was one of the most kind hearted I've ever encountered. While I share the grief for this brief loss of company, I celebrate that this this great man lived and had such a positive influence to those he so graciously served. Till we meet again my friend.

Portia, Kathy, Jay, Belinda: I just want to extend my deepest sympathy to all of you. Joel was a very fine man. When I was young, he believed in me, treated me as one of his own and instilled many values in me that I continue to try to carry to this day. If I am a fraction of the man he was, I will consider myself lucky. He will be missed by all.

Joel was the best mentors and friend that I could have asked for to be a part of my life... He taught me so much in the funeral industry, as well as simply being one of my best friends in Groves, Texas.. A good man, who earned his heavenly wings years ago.. Thankfully the Good Lord gave me the opportunity to be his employee and friend in Christ..

Prayers for the Levingstons. Remembering him from my childhood, at First United Methodist Church of Groves, he was one of the kindest, most caring people I have known. Even in his later years upon greeting him, out and about, he would say, "Now remind who you are." The smile of recognition that followed was so comforting. Such a special man. Becky Baker Thomas

Mr Joel was such a sweet-natured gentleman...always took his cowboy hat off when he greeted me...and Kathy and John brought him to my Mother's (Ruth Smith) funeral service in Port Neches to pay his condolences to me and my brother and to see that 'all was right' with the preparations...what a very special and accomplished man who spent his life in service to others in so many ways.

I have a story in my heart about Joel that I've only shared with a few people. When my own little boy died 25 years ago, Joel personally drove Donna and I to Oak Bluff. When we turned the corner and saw a large crowd I remarked to him "I wonder who's service that is for?" With tears in his eyes, he said "That's for your son and those are the people who love you." Tender and compassionate is my remembrance of him.
