John William Carlsen

1938 ∼ 2024

John William Carlsen

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Bill Carlsen,86, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Bill's journey began on January 3, 1938, in Port Arthur, Texas. Born to Gustav and Carolyn Marie Carlsen, he grew up surrounded by love and support which helped shape him into the remarkable person he became.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 16, 2024, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Groves.

Funeral services will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024, at Melancon Levingston Funeral Home in Groves. Officiating will be announced by the family. Burial will take place at Oak Bluff Memorial Park in Port Neches following the service.

From a young age, Bill possessed an insatiable curiosity and passion for engineering. He dedicated his life to honing his skills as an electrical/mechanical engineer and proudly served Texaco/Motiva/Chevron for countless years until his well-earned retirement. His commitment to his craft was undeniable, and he was highly regarded by colleagues and peers alike. In the year 1960, fate intervened when Bill crossed paths with the love of his life. While working at Texaco, he caught sight of her through a window in the mail room. Something stirred within him, compelling him to learn her name. Their connection blossomed quickly, and on March 10, 1961, they embarked on a beautiful journey together as husband and wife.  Outside of his professional achievements and cherished marriage, Bill had a deep appreciation for nature. He was the proud owner of a tree farm in Buna where he would often spend his free time nurturing the land. The serenity of the farm provided him solace and allowed him to recharge as he handled everyday challenges with grace.

He is preceded in death by his son, Eric John Carlsen, as well as two siblings: Carolyn Schultz and Jane Short.

Bill leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. He is survived by his devoted wife of sixty-three years, Marga Carlsen; daughter Christa Paige Bessell and her husband Eric of Florida; as well as his adoring grandchildren: Cody John Carlsen, Conner Carlsen Kelly and her husband Aaron, Logan Bessell and his wife Alysa, Brandt Bessell, and Merrick Bessell.

In honor of Bill's memory, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, a cause close to his heart.

I lived across the street from the Carlsens from age 8-18 and have fond memories of them and hanging out with their son, Eric, who was my classmate and friend. I always had much respect for them and they continued to be good neighbors to my mother who still lives there. I'm praying for the whole family.

Bill, was a cousin of mine on the Carlsen side of the family. We lived in Minnesota, so we came south twice a year to see the grandparents and relatives. I remember him driving over to Grandma's always bare footed. He joked around with me and I was always laughing. One day he took me to a show and asked for an adult and child ticket. I couldn't believe he did that because I was the age of an adult. He laughed at me. Then there was a time when he got his first sports car and came over to show grandma and me. He took me for a very fast ride! I tried to get on the floor and he was laughing so hard. He later changed the red color of the car to black so he wouldn't get so many speeding tickets. I will really miss Bill and our periodic chats. God bless all of you and know I really will miss him in my life.
