John "Big John" DeVries, III

John "Big John" DeVries, III, of Port Arthur, passed away on March 26, 2026. Born on March 14, 1963, in Hinsdale, Illinois, John lived a life defined by generosity, laughter, and an unwavering love for people. Known as Big John, he truly never met a stranger. Whether you knew him for years or just met him, you were treated like family. He had a gift for making people feel welcome - often greeting people with a smile, a story or a laugh.

John was the kind of man who showed his love through action. You could find him working the door, keeping an eye on everyone, or working the grill, making sure no one left hungry.

Feeding people wasn’t just something he did. It was who he was. For John, a full plate and a good conversation were the best ways to bring people together. He built a life around kindness and community. His presence was steady, his heart was big and his impact on those around him will not be forgotten. The stories shared, the meals served, and the friendships he created will carry on his legacy for years to come. John will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A visitation to honor and celebrate John's life will be held on April 9, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church, located at 1315 South 27th Street, Nederland, Texas, 77627. This solemn gathering provides a moment for all who knew John to come together, share memories, and pay their respects.

He is survived by his loving sisters: Cheri (Lenny) Banks, of Channelview; Cindy (Terry) Nichols, of Port Neches; and Colleen (Tim) Berry, of Highlands. His brother, Scott (Stacie) DeVries, of Nederland, also carry the sorrow of his passing.

John held a special place in the hearts of his nieces and nephews: Michelle (Franco) Valdivieso, Rebecca Nichols, Jennifer Nichols, Ashlyn Berry, Kaelyn Berry, Michael Banks, Chris Nichols, Conner DeVries, and Garrett DeVries. The next generation of his family, his great nieces—Taylor, Allison, Brooklyn, and Faith—and great nephews—Brandon, Landon, Braydon, Linden, Bradley, Matteo, and Jackson—will continue to honor his memory.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, John DeVries, II and Lynne DeVries, and by his niece Amanda Banks.

John "Big John" DeVries, III’s enduring spirit, strength, and kindness will forever remain in the hearts of his family and friends. As we gather in remembrance, we hold fast to the cherished moments shared and the profound impact he made on our lives. May his soul find eternal peace.
