John Henry Shepherd of Port Arthur, Texas passed away surrounded by family at Houston Methodist Hospital on Saturday, March 11th, 2023, after 70 years of life. His battle with multiple medical issues in recent years showed his true courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile. Despite the pain, John never complained and stayed strong until the very end.
If you knew John, you know he was a family man. He was preceded in death by his parents James & Josephine Shepherd and three of his siblings Flem, Jimmy, and Emma Ruth Shepherd. His family finds peace thinking about the sweet reunion they are all having now.
John is survived by his wife, Nicki Shepherd; his daughter, Tegan VonBerg and her husband, Brendan VonBerg; his granddaughter Evelynn VonBerg; his sister, Sarah Shepherd; and his brother Frank Shepherd and his wife, Maralyn Shepherd; as well as three nieces and two nephews. His family is brought comfort in knowing he’s now watching out for them from above. One day they will all be reunited once again. As spoken at bedside in his final moments by his beloved sister, Sarah, “Baby brother this isn’t goodbye, this is see you later.”
Some of John’s families fondest memories of him include : the sharing of jokes, funny stories about pranking coworkers from his time at DuPont, his co-ed softball and volleyball days, his obsession with Buccee’s cinnamon rolls, one Christmas when he was a young boy he stole his sister’s brand new doll in exchange for the toy guns and holsters he had received, the made up songs he would sing loudly around the house, the random phone calls and text messages just to check on everyone whether he had just seen you a few days before or it had been a while, and especially the heart and selflessness he always showed in spite of hard times. There is no doubt that John was greatly loved and will be missed by so many.
A visitation will be held at 9am followed by a memorial service at 10am on March 18th, 2023 at Wesley Methodist Church, 3515 Helena Ave, Nederland, TX 77627. All are welcome to attend to celebrate his life and express condolences to John’s family.
