Jonas Gibson of Nederland, TX passed away Thursday morning, January 16, 2014 at 7:30 a.m. He was a gift that was given with a heart condition. He had 16 miraculous years filled with life, joy, and music. He began playing the violin and piano at the age of 3. He wanted to follow his “big” brother Daniel. Jonas attended Interlochen Arts Camp in the summer of 2008 where he was placed in the Junior Advanced String Program. He also attended American Festival for the Arts in 2011 and New England Music Camp in 2012 and 2013. Jonas was named by the Symphony League of Beaumont as the Outstanding Young Performer in 2005 and 2007, and Outstanding Performer in 2012 at their annual String Competition. He was also named the Region X Junior High Orchestra concertmaster for 2009, 2010, and 2011 and made Texas All-State Orchestra in 2013. He and his brother Daniel won 1st place in the 2012 Virtuosi of Houston Concerto Competition. He was a member Houston Youth Symphony and their quartet program. He was also a member of Virtuosi of Houston where he was concertmaster. He studied with Matt Detrick, Linda Gregorian, Andrzej Grabiec, Rodica Gonzales, and his beloved Aggie In.
He is survived by his parents Rick and KayLynn Gibson and siblings Daniel, Travis, Mary Kathryn, Peter, and Joseph; grandparents, Richard and Kathy Gibson of Nederland and Bob and Mary Patterson of El Paso; aunts and uncles, Melissa and Lloyd Clayton of Dallas, Kim and Jay Deville of Beaumont, Wade and Joan Killingsworth of Birmingham, AL, and Sherri and Richard Davis of Kirbyville, TX; and cousins, Jordan, Jessica, Emily, Jayme, Noah, Wesley, Isaac, Vallie Beth, Nathaniel, Patrick, Katherine, Joshua, Grace, Benjamin, Jackson, Ian; and many friends.
Funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Nederland on Sunday, January 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m., his father, teacher, and pastor, Rick Gibson officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held prior to the service from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Melancon’s Funeral Home in Nederland.
In lieu of flowers, a fund has been set up at Community Bank account #9100331 to help cover funeral expenses and future pediatric congenital heart research.
