Joseph Rick Castillo

1953 ∼ 2022

Joseph “Rick” Castillo, 68, of Houston, Texas passed away on May 9, 2022 at Baptist Hospital of Southeast Texas in Beaumont.

Funeral services will be 10:00a.m. Saturday May 14, 2022, at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves.

Rick was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on September 15, 1953, and was as the son of Rene’ Fernandez Castillo and

Joan Ambler Castillo. He left the Golden Triangle after attending Lamar University to pursue a career as a computer programmer in Houston, where he worked for an oil company, accounting firms, and the Houston Independent School District.

Rick’s family and friends enjoyed the ceramic and terra cotta nativity scenes, vases, decorations, and dishware that he fired in his kiln. He always had a menagerie of pets, raising chickens, ducks, pigeons, and turkeys as a teenager, and having dogs and cats as an adult. He greatly enjoyed traveling. In addition to his various trips within the U.S.A. and Mexico, he especially loved to tell people about his two trips to Europe.

Rick made sure that he was present in the lives of his nieces and nephews. They remember him as the uncle who was full of personality and fun and cooked the sausage-cheese balls at Christmas. Rick cared about people, and he loved to eat at local restaurants in Houston with friends and family where he knew the owners or staff. Even during his declining health in the last years, he still loved to laugh, and his friends and family will always remember that he had a smile.

Rick was preceded in death by his father, Rene’ Fernandez Castillo of Groves, Texas.

He is survived by his mother, Joan Castillo of Groves; sister, Rosemary Mathis of Beaumont; brothers, David Castillo of Houston, Ronnie Castillo of Grand Prairie and Ambler Castillo of Groves.

Rick was such a great friend. He never wanted to see anyone fail and always went over and beyond for the people he loved. Wish I could have spent more time with my friend in his last days, but I know he has made one heck of an Angel

I will always remember how Ricky would always stop by at Christmas with that big smile and that joyous personality. I loved listening to him talk of the places he’d been & what he was up to. If he didn’t make me smile… he’d darn sure make me laugh. Thanks for remembering us Ricky , We will always remember you:heart::pray::skin-tone-4: Rest in Heaven Cousin~ Melinda Castillo Dumphy

I first knew Ricky as a classmate PN-G Class of ‘72. He became legendary among our classmates when he played the comic role of a scrawny Superman being carried off the stage in the arms of the very athletic “damsel in distress” ( Becky Barrows), whom he had just “rescued!” It was a defining moment in our class Variety Show! I think that was something he really enjoyed!! He had such a great good humor and was always at the center of the fun and laughter! We were all delighted to see him at our last class reunion. He will be very sadly missed at our 50 year reunion next month. My heart is with all of you who love him, family and friends. I will comfort myself with the memory of his laughter ringing out above all the others laughing with him!

I send my deepest sympathy to family and friends on the passing our dear Ricky. He was a classmate of mine from PNG 72. It was always such a pleasure to visit with Ricky at our reunions and get togethers in Houston. He always enjoyed visiting his classmates and we were blessed with his joyfulness. May God rest his soul and comfort his family and friends as we mourn his passing.

Rick Castillo, as he was known to his many close friends in Houston, was a dear friend to many of us. Sadly he joins so many of our friends who we lost too early in the 80s and 90s. Rick was a very loving and caring guy who was always ready to lend a helping hand in just about any situation. He was known for his live of gardening, food, and for his love of his beloved pets. Especially his Boston Terriers, and he raised many! He would squeal in delight when his babies would smother his face with doggie kisses. Rick also loved to share vegetables from his abundant garden. I'm sure he was greeted in Heaven by his many friends and pets when he crossed that rainbow Bridge. Rick will be missed by many friends who survive him.

To the Castillo family-I met Ricky at Woodlawn and from the first, there was a definite connection. If I had one word to describe him it would be genuine. From carrying him off stage during a variety show, our endless phone conversations, to dancing (Rick was in a wheelchair) at our last reunion-it was always pure joy. I've had mixed emotions about his passing-I'm going to miss cutting up with him on the phone but am glad he's at peace. Becky Barrows Spreen Death takes the body. God takes the soul. Our mind holds the memories. Our love heart keeps the love. Our faith lets us know we will meet again.
